Tehran, July 5. After the recent warning from US President Donald Trump, Iran has taken a tough stance regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has clarified that this strategic sea route is not a platform for military demonstration by any external power. Tehran said the Strait of Hormuz should be used to maintain regional stability and ensure safe navigation, and not to project military power.
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi wrote on the social media platform X that Iran, being the responsible and guarantor of the security of the Strait of Hormuz, warns against any military activity in this sensitive maritime area. He said that the security of this sea route is entirely the responsibility of Iran and Oman.
According to Xinhua news agency, Garibabadi also rejected the joint statement by the leaders of Britain and France, which called for international cooperation to ensure the safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the deployment of a multinational military mission if necessary. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron said in a joint statement issued on Friday that the Strait of Hormuz is an extremely important sea route for the global economy and ensuring the safe movement of ships of all countries here should be a priority for the whole world.
The two leaders also said Oman has agreed to work with Britain and France to maintain safe navigation in its territorial waters. He also indicated that if necessary, a comprehensive multinational military mission could also be deployed. Meanwhile, Iran’s semiofficial Fars News Agency, citing maritime tracking data, claimed that eight ships trying to pass through the coast of Oman on Saturday were turned back.
At the same time, according to Bloomberg report, some ships were forced to suddenly change direction after reaching near the Musandam Peninsula. These included one crude oil tanker, two petroleum product tankers and one bulk carrier. According to the report, these ships later turned north following Iran’s instructions and used an alternative sea route.
The report also said that Iran has further tightened its surveillance and control over the Strait of Hormuz following the joint attacks by Israel and the US on Iranian territory on February 28. Under this, restrictions have been imposed on the safe movement of ships belonging to Israel and America or their allies. However, this claim could not be independently confirmed.
