England manager Thomas Tuchel has provided a mixed update on player fitness as his side prepare for their crucial World Cup Round of 16 encounter against co-hosts Mexico. While one defender has returned to full training, another key figure remains a significant doubt ahead of the contest at the legendary Azteca Stadium.

Reece James remains a concern for England

England are anxiously waiting to know whether Reece James will be fit to feature, after the Chelsea skipper missed the team’s final training session in Mexico City. The right-back has been nursing a hamstring problem that first appeared during the group-stage draw with Ghana. His continued absence from full training suggests he is still fighting to regain fitness before Sunday’s knockout match.

Although the situation around James remains uncertain, Tuchel did confirm a positive development as Jarell Quansah returned to full training. Quansah sat out the narrow 2-1 win over DR Congo after sustaining an ankle injury in the earlier triumph against Panama. His availability provides a much-needed boost to a backline that has had to undergo several changes throughout the tournament. “You saw that Jarell trained, Jarell trained fully, is fully available. Reece can maybe make it onto the bench, he needs a last assessment from the doctors and medical opinion if this makes sense,” said the German coach.

Tuchel embraces iconic World Cup atmosphere

Despite the injuries and logistical challenges, Tuchel remains focused on leading England into the quarter-finals, with Miami the next potential destination. The former Bayern Munich manager expressed his appreciation for the experience and the warm reception his team has received in Mexico, though he knows that hospitality will fade once the match begins.

“It’s just an iconic match on a big stage, and we feel it,” Tuchel commented after the training session at Pumas’ ‘Quarry’ complex. “People were very friendly, very respectful, very emotional. Of course, they will support their own team tomorrow. That’s absolutely normal. We had an amazing training facility today. Beautiful environment, very calm, on the highest level. So there’s a kind of that. You know about the situation. You spoke about it. But people will take care of what needs to be taken care of. We need a strong performance, and I think we will have that.”

Harry Kane issues 'no excuses' message

England captain Harry Kane has urged his teammates to stay focused despite the challenges they face in what he described as a tie that is “as big as it gets.” The Three Lions will be playing in front of a passionate home crowd and under the threat of thunderstorms in Mexico City, but Kane insists that they must find a way to advance, regardless of Reece James’s potential absence.

“It’s going to be a really tough game for many different reasons,” Kane said. “First of all [Mexico] are a really good team. Then all these other little details are going to make it even harder, but from our point of view it’s another opportunity to build some momentum. It’s kind of the peak time to do that. So there’s no excuses in a game like this. We know it will be tough. We know we might have to grind it out. We might have to find a different way to win. But that’s what the World Cup is about. Everyone’s looking forward to the occasion, the stadium, the atmosphere, and ultimately putting yourself in those games. That’s why you train like we do. That’s why you play football, it’s to have these epic games.”

Jordan Henderson relishes Azteca experience

As anticipation builds ahead of the clash, the atmosphere in Mexico City is reaching fever pitch. The altitude and fervent home support are expected to test England’s composure. Veteran midfielder Jordan Henderson admitted that even with his years of top-level experience, this occasion feels entirely unique.

He said: “No, I don’t think this game compares with any game that I have been involved in to be honest. Yes, I have played a lot of different games in the Champions League but in the World Cup, in Mexico, against Mexico, I don’t think anything compares with that. So that’s why it’s such a good game to be involved in.”
