Thomas Tuchel has expressed optimism that Reece James could make a return to England’s matchday squad for their pivotal FIFA World Cup encounter against Mexico.
The Chelsea captain sat out of full team training on Saturday afternoon, instead following a tailored recovery plan as he continues to rehabilitate from a hamstring injury. Tuchel, however, confirmed that his first-choice right-back would face a late fitness test before Sunday’s 6 p.m. kick-off.
In more positive news, Jarrell Quansah has recovered from the ankle injury sustained a week earlier against Panama. The Bayer Leverkusen defender is now in contention to start at right-back, potentially replacing Djed Spence, who found it difficult in England’s previous victory over DR Congo.
“Jarrell trained and is completely fit,” Tuchel stated. “Reece might be able to make the bench, but we still need final clearance from the medical team.”
Meanwhile, Declan Rice has been declared fit for Sunday’s last-16 fixture. The midfield anchor continues to manage discomfort in his back and hamstring. Rice concluded the match against DR Congo playing at right-back but is expected to line up in midfield alongside Elliot Anderson.
Tuchel emphasised that he does not anticipate a hostile atmosphere for his players, instead expecting Mexico’s supporters to be “emotional and supportive” of their national team.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference outside the 80,000-capacity stadium, Tuchel said: “It will be emotional and full of support for the home side. I’m not expecting hostility. So far, everyone has been very respectful. A stadium like this can generate an incredible atmosphere for the hosts.”
He added, “It makes me feel alive. I want to meet my own expectations. I think we’re ready.”
There has been speculation that England’s players might struggle to get sleep on Saturday night, with reports suggesting that Mexican fans could set off fireworks and make loud noises outside the team hotel. Tuchel, however, insisted that his side “deserve respect” and revealed that approximately 100 riot police were stationed outside their hotel in the western part of Mexico City.
“We’ve had no issues today. I believe FIFA is aware of the situation, and we have adequate security at the hotel,” Tuchel explained. “It’s a 6 p.m. kick-off, so even if we lose some sleep, we’ll have time to rest in the morning.
“I don’t want to discuss problems that don’t exist. Everything I’ve experienced so far has been respectful, passionate, and supportive. We show respect to everyone and expect the same in return. Talking about hypothetical problems doesn’t make sense.
“If challenges arise, we’ll handle them. The tournament itself is demanding, and the best approach is to stay calm.”
England held a one-hour training session on Saturday afternoon to adjust to the altitude difference, with Mexico City sitting 7,220 feet above sea level.
Tuchel admitted, “We could feel it. I had a slight headache and didn’t sleep perfectly, but nothing unmanageable. The players felt it early in training, but they adapted as the session went on. You can’t physically adjust in a day—it’s impossible. We came early to experience it.”
“It’s no coincidence that Mexico plays aggressively and with intensity at home. The first 15–20 minutes will be the most challenging for us. Once we get through that, we’ll be in a strong position.”
Alongside Tuchel, Jordan Henderson reflected on the significance of the upcoming match, calling it one of the biggest moments of his career.
“It’s a massive occasion—there’s nothing quite like playing Mexico in Mexico City in that stadium,” said Henderson, who is featuring in his fourth World Cup. “It’s an incredible event for everyone, but we must stay focused. Mexico are a quality side with talented players. Every match in the World Cup is tough, and we’re all eager to take the field tomorrow.”
“I hope this brings out the best in us.”
