Foreign University Campuses in India: Studying at a prestigious foreign university is a dream for many students, but high tuition fees and living expenses abroad often make this dream difficult to realize. However, there is now significant, positive news for students. Several major global universities are set to open campuses in India, which could largely eliminate the need to go abroad for studies. Following the initiative at GIFT City, new international college campuses are planned for several major cities. This will provide students with the opportunity to access world-class education, international degrees, and global faculty right here in India. Let us take a look at which cities—beyond GIFT City—are set to host these new international college campuses.

15 International College Campuses to Open in India

According to the Union Ministry of Education, Letters of Intent have been issued to 15 international universities to establish independent campuses in India. Most of these institutions are preparing to commence classes for their first batch starting this August. Initially, each campus will admit approximately 200 to 250 students. The goal is to increase this intake to between 1,000 and 1,200 students annually over the next five years. Reports indicate that over 10,000 applications have already been received under the current admission process.

Complete List of International Universities Opening Campuses in India

Prominent international universities preparing to set up campuses in India include the University of Southampton (UK), Deakin University (Australia), University of Wollongong (Australia), Queen’s University Belfast (UK), University of Liverpool (UK), University of York (UK), University of Bristol (UK), University of Aberdeen (UK), Illinois Institute of Technology (USA), Western Sydney University (Australia), Victoria University (Australia), Coventry University (UK), University of Surrey (UK), La Trobe University (Australia), and Lancaster University (UK).

In which cities are international college campuses opening?

New campuses for international colleges are being established in four major Indian cities. The University of Southampton and Victoria University will launch their campuses in Delhi-NCR (Gurugram). Deakin University, the University of Wollongong, and Queen’s University Belfast are setting up campuses in GIFT City. Meanwhile, the University of Liverpool will open a campus in Bengaluru. Additionally, the highest number of international college campuses are set to open in Mumbai, where four such institutions are establishing a presence; the University of York, University of Bristol, University of Aberdeen, and Illinois Institute of Technology are preparing to launch their campuses there. These cities were selected due to their superior infrastructure, industry connectivity, and large student base.

What are the admission eligibility criteria?

For entry into most of these international universities, students generally require a minimum of 75% marks in Class 12. For postgraduate courses, a score ranging from 55% to 70% may be required. These percentage requirements vary depending on the specific course and university. If a student has secured between 70% and 85% marks in English in their board examinations, many universities may waive the requirement for an IELTS score.

What subjects will be taught?

Initially, these universities will focus primarily on modern, employment-oriented courses. Key subjects will include Artificial Intelligence (AI), Computer Science, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). The curriculum, examination systems, and grading methods at these universities will align with those of their parent international campuses.

Opportunities to Study Abroad

Students enrolled at these universities will also have the opportunity to study abroad for one or two semesters. The University of York will introduce a ‘2+1’ model, allowing students to study for two years at the Mumbai campus and one year in the UK. Students at the University of Bristol’s India campus will be able to access the university’s AI supercomputing facilities located in the UK via cloud systems.

Faculty and Scholarship Arrangements

Teaching at these campuses will be conducted by a mix of Indian educators and visiting professors from abroad. Scholarships based on merit and financial need will be available to students. A combined scholarship fund of approximately ₹1,000 crore has been allocated for the next five years. Students may receive fee waivers ranging from 10% to 100%. Additionally, institutions such as the University of Aberdeen and the University of Bristol have announced separate scholarship schemes. The establishment of these campuses in India will provide students with access to international-standard education, global degrees, world-class faculty, and research facilities right here at home. Moreover, the cost of education will be 30% to 40% lower compared to studying abroad.
