The thought of shifting plants from one pot to another, while they grow, surely makes the gardener enthusiasts vexed. But what if this problem has an immediate solution?
People who love gardening always look for essentials that will save their time while nurturing their dear plants. Hence, the world's first pot that expands with the plant, reducing the need for repeated repotting is here.
An expandable pot helps avoid the disruption by gradually creating more space for the roots without requiring the plant to be transferred.
The newly developed pot could grow as your plant grows. Isn't it jaw-dropping? The amount of time and resources it is going to save, is commendable.
It has taken inspiration from the folding structures used by NASA engineers and increased its soil capacity eightfold, expanding from a compact 0.25 litres vessel into a two-litre pot, The Herald reported.
Andrew Flynn the co-founder spoke to Daily Mail where he said, “Repotting sounds simple, but it actually takes a bit of confidence. You have to know when a plant is ready, ease it out without damaging the roots and hope it settles into its new home.”
“It's something a lot of people find daunting, especially if they're new to looking after plants.”
“We wanted to design a pot that grows with the plant instead of asking people to start the process all over again every time it needs more space.”
“As the plant develops, the pot simply expands, making it much easier to keep it healthy without the stress of a full repot.”
The pot is made up of interchangeable accessories; it comes with different attachments that can be swapped depending on what you want to grow. It allows users to grow basil, mint, parsley, coriander, oregano and microgreens.
The pot also has a concealed water reservoir and wick which enables a plant to self-regulate its own water intake for up to two weeks.
The design enables the same pot to support a plant from seed or cutting through to a more established stage of growth.
‘Most pots are designed for one stage of a plant’s life,’ Mr. Flynn said. ‘We wanted to create one system that could adapt from seed or cutting through to a more established plant.
‘We've spent years refining the design because we felt there was a better way to solve a problem that hasn't really changed for generations.’
The whole idea emerged from Andrew realising, watering and repotting should be something easier to people who love to grow plants. But tasks like moving your plants to bigger pots when the plants grow is a hassle.
