Two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas is taking in the excitement of the World Cup as a fan while preparing for the next phase of her club career as a free agent.
Putellas has long been a standout figure in women’s football, and as she steps away from Barcelona after a remarkable 14 seasons, her future remains a major talking point. Reports have linked her to a possible transfer to London City Lionesses, though no official statement has yet been made. While a move within Europe seems most likely, several clubs from the National Women's Soccer League have reportedly offered attractive deals as well.
Reflecting on her time at Barcelona, Putellas can look back on an era of immense success — 38 trophies, including 10 league titles, and an extraordinary record of 232 goals in 507 appearances.
In an exclusive conversation with Goal, Putellas described her journey with Barcelona as “a period of growth, ambition, and unforgettable moments shared with incredible teammates, staff, and fans.”
Although she has not disclosed her next destination, the Spanish star is currently enjoying the World Cup from the stands, cheering for her country as a supporter of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup-winning team.
“What makes the World Cup so special is that it brings the entire football community together,” Putellas said.
‘An incredible milestone for Spanish football’
While her professional future may include negotiations and offers from top clubs, Putellas insists she is fully focused on the ongoing World Cup. “I’ve been following the tournament,” she said. “The intensity, the atmosphere in the stadiums, and the unexpected moments are always highlights for me. The World Cup has a unique way of creating unforgettable stories.”
Spain’s footballing history includes two World Cup titles — the men’s triumph in 2010 and the women’s victory in 2023. Putellas reflected on the significance of this dual success, saying, “It would be an incredible achievement for Spanish football. Success at the international level shows young players that dreams can become reality. If both the women’s and men’s teams continue to excel on the world stage, it sends a powerful message to the next generation that Spanish football remains a global benchmark.”
‘Every successful tournament helps the game grow’
As the men’s World Cup unfolds, Putellas remains a proud supporter of Spain but also recognises the broader importance of such tournaments. “Every successful football tournament helps grow the game globally,” she noted. “When fans engage with international football, that enthusiasm often extends to other competitions as well.
“I believe a successful men’s World Cup can generate even greater anticipation for the women’s tournament and bring new audiences to women’s football.”
Her next club decision will likely take into account which environment best prepares her for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Spain secured their place in that tournament by topping Group A3 in the UEFA Women’s European Qualifiers, clinching automatic qualification in June with a 6-1 victory over Iceland.
‘It brings the entire football community together’
This year, Putellas has once again teamed up with Lay’s through the ‘No Lay’s, No Game’ campaign, celebrating the shared passion between players and fans. “The game simply isn’t the same without the passion, energy, and support of the fans,” she said. “What makes the World Cup so special is that it brings the entire football community together. It’s one of those rare times when fans from all over the world share the same emotions, celebrate the same moments, and create memories together.”
Usually the one signing jerseys for young fans, Putellas now finds herself on the other side of the experience, enjoying the spectacle as a supporter. “I’m hoping to attend some matches,” she added. “Being in the stadium during a World Cup is incredible — you can truly feel the energy and passion of the crowd. For now, I’m taking things one day at a time and enjoying the tournament as it unfolds.”
Putellas spotted in Los Angeles
Putellas was recently seen at Los Angeles Stadium, where Spain claimed a 3-0 victory over Austria in the Round of 32 — believed to be the first World Cup match she has attended in person this tournament.
Whether she is soaking up the atmosphere as a fan or preparing for the next big move in her career, one thing is certain — Alexia Putellas continues to command attention both on and off the pitch, with the ball still very much at her feet.
