Ange Postecoglou has officially made his return to football management after being announced as the new head coach of Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr. The former Tottenham Hotspur and Celtic manager will now take charge of a squad full of stars, led by five-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo.
Al-Nassr confirm Postecoglou’s appointment
The Saudi Pro League powerhouse has entrusted the Australian coach to guide them into their next chapter. After the departure of Jorge Jesus, who had steered the team to the league title, Al-Nassr acted swiftly to bring in the experienced former Premier League boss.
The club made the announcement through their official channels, signalling their determination to continue asserting dominance across the region.
In their statement, Al-Nassr said: “It’s official: Mr. Ange Postecoglou is the new Head Coach of Al-Nassr. He has signed a contract for two seasons.”
This move marks Postecoglou’s first return to the dugout since his challenging spell in the East Midlands, giving him a high-profile opportunity to rebuild his managerial reputation alongside one of the greatest players of all time.
Leaving behind his Nottingham Forest setback
Postecoglou arrives in Riyadh aiming to move past a tough period in his career. The 60-year-old’s last managerial role at Nottingham Forest lasted only 39 days, a period he recently described as “brutal.” During his short tenure at the City Ground, he failed to record a single win in eight matches, which led to his swift dismissal by the club’s management.
Recalling the day he was relieved of his duties, Postecoglou said: “It was brutal. I was in the coaches’ room. I knew it could happen any day, but they sacked me straight after the game. I hadn’t even done the presser yet, but the press already knew. I was walking through the corridors. I just wanted to leave; otherwise, I might have done something I’d regret. I wanted to get out of there.”
A career filled with trophies
Despite the disappointment at Nottingham Forest, Postecoglou was chosen for the Al-Nassr job due to his proven track record of success. He famously ended Tottenham Hotspur’s long trophy drought by winning the Europa League against Manchester United in Bilbao. His time at Celtic was even more decorated, securing five trophies, including a domestic treble in Scotland.
This history of success made him the preferred choice over other high-profile candidates. Reports suggest he edged out Portugal national team coach Roberto Martinez to secure the position in Riyadh.
The challenge of managing Ronaldo
Postecoglou’s biggest test will be handling Cristiano Ronaldo, who remains the central figure of the Al-Nassr project. The Portuguese icon continues to be the face of the Saudi Pro League, and the new coach will need to balance his tactical style with the star forward’s specific needs on the field.
The Australian manager had been working as a television pundit for ITV during the World Cup this summer but will now return to full-time coaching responsibilities. With a two-year contract in place, Postecoglou has a defined timeframe to implement his attacking philosophy in the Middle East and ensure that Ronaldo’s final years in professional football bring more silverware to Al-Nassr’s gold and blue colours.
