The Chelsea midfielder has been persistently linked with a move to Real Madrid, but the Spanish giants have now publicly dismissed any such interest.
Real Madrid have taken the unusual step of releasing an official statement rejecting ongoing rumours linking them with Chelsea’s Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez.
The Argentina international, currently representing his country at the World Cup, has been repeatedly associated with a potential move to the Santiago Bernabeu. Neither the player nor his representatives had made significant efforts to refute those reports, which further fuelled speculation.
Fernandez was handed a two-match suspension by Chelsea after publicly expressing his admiration for the city of Madrid while on international duty, a move that created tension within the club.
Chelsea have consistently maintained their position that Enzo Fernandez is not available for transfer.
According to BBC Sport, the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge believe their relationship with the midfielder remains intact despite recent controversies.
Addressing the speculation, Real Madrid published an official statement on their website which read: “In light of the information and statements that have emerged in recent days regarding an alleged interest from Real Madrid C.F. in the player Enzo Fernandez, the club wishes to state that it has not made any efforts, either directly or indirectly, aimed at signing the aforementioned player and, furthermore, has no intention of pursuing such an operation.”
The statement continued: “Real Madrid wishes to express its utmost respect for Enzo Fernandez, a great footballer whose career and quality are widely recognized, as well as for Chelsea FC, a club with which it maintains an excellent institutional relationship.”
“Out of respect for an institution like Chelsea FC and the principles of institutional loyalty that have always guided Real Madrid’s actions, the club considers it necessary to categorically deny these speculations, which are unfounded and do not reflect reality.”
“Real Madrid regrets that, despite the clarity of the facts and the absence of any action by the club, information continues to circulate that does not correspond to reality and only serves to create confusion among fans and unnecessarily harm the entities and individuals involved.”
It remains unclear what specifically prompted Real Madrid to issue such a direct and detailed response to the rumours.
Enzo Fernandez joined Chelsea from Benfica in 2023 for a record transfer fee of £107 million.
The Blues endured a disappointing campaign last season, finishing 10th in the Premier League following the resignation of Enzo Maresca midway through the season and the subsequent appointment of Liam Rosenior as his replacement.
At Real Madrid, newly appointed manager Xabi Alonso has been brought in ahead of the new season with hopes of restoring the club’s dominance both domestically and in Europe.
