Railway Rule: If you frequently travel by train, take note: any passenger found smoking on railway premises or inside a train will face strict action and a fine.

Railway Rule: Knowing railway regulations is essential if you travel by train. You may have seen people smoking on railway premises or inside trains; this is strictly against the rules. Now, anyone found using cigarettes, tobacco, or *bidis* on a train or at a railway station will face strict action and a fine. Therefore, it is important for you to be aware of these railway regulations.

Fines for getting caught smoking cigarettes or *bidis*

According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Railways, amendments have been made to several sections of the Railways Act, 1989, under the Jan Vishwas Act, 2026. Under the new rules, action will be taken against any passenger found using cigarettes, *bidis*, or similar items on a train or at a railway station. If caught smoking, you could be fined up to ₹2,000. Furthermore, you could even be deboarded from the train if necessary.

Action for refusing to pay the fine

If a passenger refuses to pay the fine, legal action will be taken against them. The matter could escalate to court, potentially resulting in a fine of up to ₹5,000.

Action will also be taken for violations other than smoking.

Action is not limited to smoking; strict measures can be taken against any passenger who violates railway rules on the premises or on the train. Examples include:

Traveling without a valid ticket.
Traveling on a used ticket.
Begging on railway premises.
Men traveling in a women-only coach (which is against the rules).
Keep these points in mind and adhere to railway regulations to avoid penalties and fines.
