Cristiano Ronaldo appears ready to conclude his illustrious international journey at the end of the ongoing World Cup. The Portugal skipper’s sister has publicly confirmed that the 41-year-old forward is preparing to call time on his record-breaking international career, with no plans to feature in Euro 2028.

Legendary international chapter nearing its end

Portugal’s camp has been shaken by revelations that this will be Ronaldo’s last appearance at a major international tournament. The veteran striker, who recently became the oldest player at 41 to feature in a World Cup knockout fixture, also netted his first-ever knockout goal via a penalty in a tense 2-1 victory over Croatia. However, reports from his close family circle suggest the captain intends to retire from international football once this competition finishes.

Inside source confirms his farewell plans

Speaking to Sport TV upon her arrival in Toronto to support her brother, Katia Aveiro revealed she has dependable insight into Ronaldo’s future. Despite the immense scrutiny and pressure of tournament football, she emphasised that the Al-Nassr star remains calm and focused as he prepares for his final international outing.

Katia said, “The most important thing is to cherish these more than 20 years we’ve shared. I feel an enormous sense of pride. I was in Qatar, and I am here now. It’s truly special. I’m confident that we’ll be smiling at the end.”

She added, “Ronaldo is confident, less anxious than we are. I’ve sensed positive energy and assurance from him. As fans, that gives us comfort. We trust him. Spain in the round of 16? Whoever comes next, we’ll be ready to face them.”

When asked if Ronaldo might continue until Euro 2028, Katia provided a clear response based on reliable information. She said, “From what I know, it’s time to say your goodbyes. Not just today, but yes, I believe this is the farewell. I’m referring to the national team. From a reliable source, the World Cup is the ‘last dance.’”

Family defends Ronaldo amid criticism

Ronaldo has endured intense public debate over his performances and longevity at the top level during this World Cup. Nevertheless, his family has continued to stand firmly by him, stating that his unparalleled achievements over the past two decades far outweigh any criticism directed his way.

Katia further commented, “Anyone who truly understands football must appreciate Ronaldo. Those who don’t are the ones missing out. He’s been breaking barriers for over 20 years. Look at how far the Aveiro family has come from where we began. The hardships my mother endured… do you think criticism can affect our joy? Never!”

Portugal prepare for crucial clash

Portugal now face a stern test of their title aspirations when they take on European champions Spain in a mouth-watering round-of-16 encounter on Monday. After edging past Croatia thanks to Goncalo Ramos’ dramatic stoppage-time goal, Roberto Martinez’s men will need to raise their game significantly.

With the confirmation of Ronaldo’s imminent international retirement looming large over the team, the Portuguese squad will be determined to extend their captain’s farewell campaign as long as possible.
