Former Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez has officially announced his retirement from international football after Algeria’s 2-0 loss to Switzerland in the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup. The 35-year-old ends a remarkable 12-year stint with the national team, during which he earned 119 caps and led his country to Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) glory.

Mahrez decided to call time on his international career after Algeria’s elimination from the tournament. Despite a spirited campaign that saw them reach the knockout stages, goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye sealed their fate. Speaking immediately after the match, the veteran winger confirmed that the defeat would mark his final appearance for the Desert Foxes.

In an interview with beIN SPORTS following the game, Mahrez said the World Cup exit signified the end of his journey with the national squad. “It’s my last appearance even with the national team. It was my last game,” Mahrez stated, confirming his decision to retire from international duty.

The former Manchester City star leaves behind an impressive legacy with Algeria, having made 119 appearances and become one of the nation’s most iconic footballers. His leadership and creativity on the field have been pivotal in shaping Algeria’s modern football identity.

One of the highlights of Mahrez’s international career came in 2019, when he captained Algeria to their second AFCON title. His stunning stoppage-time free-kick against Nigeria in the semi-final remains one of the most memorable moments in Algerian football history. Through more than a decade of dedication, Mahrez established himself as a key influence both on and off the pitch, and his retirement marks the end of an era for Algerian football.

With his international chapter now closed, Mahrez is expected to focus entirely on his club career with Al-Ahli. Meanwhile, Algeria will begin the process of rebuilding their squad as they look ahead to future international competitions without one of their all-time greats.
