The Central Government has given major information on Friday regarding the Employee Provident Fund (EPF). Right to Information (RTI) has revealed that more than Rs 9,330 crore is deposited in 30.91 lakh inactive EPF accounts across the country. There is neither anyone going to withdraw nor claim this amount.
Actually, the new scheme of EPF has come into effect on 29 June 2026. This new scheme will replace the 1952 EPF scheme. The government says that the new scheme aims to simplify the PF rules by changing the rules and make the system more digital for about eight crore active EPFO accounts.
Unclaimed balance present in lakhs of accounts
India Today quoted the Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) as saying that as of March 31, 2026, there were 30,91,862 inactive EPF accounts. There was an unclaimed balance of approximately Rs 9,330 crore in these accounts.
In the same RTI it has been told that last year the number of inactive EPF accounts was 31.83 lakh. Later, Rs 10,181 crore were deposited in these accounts. But, later this number reduced to 30.91 lakh and the amount of unclaimed money reduced by 851 crores to 9,330 crores.
What can come from Rs 9,330 crore?
This money lying in inactive accounts of EPF is so much that it can make the budget of many ministries of the central government. The central government has spent Rs 10,169 crore on the UDAN Regional Connectivity Scheme since its launch in 2016. Similarly, the Central Government has passed a similar budget for the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) for 2026-27.
