8th Pay Commission: If you are a central government employee or have a family member in a government job, this news is for you. Discussions regarding the 8th Pay Commission have gained momentum once again. Lakhs of employees and pensioners are eager to know exactly how much their salaries will increase. While the fitment factor has not yet been finalized, if the government implements a 1.83 fitment factor, a significant rise in the minimum basic salary could be seen.
Around 10 million (1 crore) central government employees and pensioners across the country are awaiting the recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission. Once the commission's report is released, changes will occur in basic salary, pension, Dearness Allowance (DA), and other allowances.
What exactly is a fitment factor?
Many people wonder what a fitment factor is and how it leads to a salary increase. Simply put, the fitment factor is a multiplier used to convert the current basic salary into the new basic salary.
Formula:
Current Basic Salary × Fitment Factor = New Basic Salary
In other words, the higher the fitment factor, the greater the increase in basic salary.
How much will the salary increase if the 1.83 fitment factor is implemented?
The government has not yet taken a final decision. However, if the 1.83 fitment factor is approved, the estimated basic salary could look something like this:
| Level 1 | ₹18,000 | ₹32,940 |
| Level 2 | ₹19,900 | ₹36,417 |
| Level 3 | ₹21,700 | ₹39,711 |
| Level 4 | ₹25,500 | ₹46,665 |
| Level 5 | ₹29,200 | ₹53,436 |
| Level 6 | ₹35,400 | ₹64,782 |
| Level 7 | ₹44,900 | ₹82,167 |
| Level 10 | ₹56,100 | ₹1,02,663 |
| Level 13 | ₹1,23,100 | ₹2,25,273 |
| Level 18 | ₹2,50,000 | ₹4,57,500 |
Note: These are merely estimated figures. The actual salary will be determined only after the commission's recommendations are made and the government grants its approval.
Will the employees' demands be met?
Government employee unions are demanding that the fitment factor be set at around 3.83. Meanwhile, various reports suggest it could range between 1.83 and 2.57. All eyes are now fixed on the Central Government and the final recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission.
What lies ahead?
The 8th Pay Commission is headed by former Supreme Court Judge Ranjana Prakash Desai. The Commission will hold consultations with employees and other stakeholders in Bhubaneswar on July 6–7 and in Kolkata on July 9–10. It has also invited applications for 20 consultant positions. The process for submitting memoranda concluded on June 15, while the deadline for submitting data online was June 30.
The Commission is expected to submit its report to the government within 18 months. Consequently, the recommendations could be released by February 2027 or mid-2027. However, drawing from the experience of previous pay commissions, it could take another two to three years for the new salary structure to be implemented. This means employees are likely to receive their revised salaries by 2029 or 2030.
