Unai Simón has made history by becoming the goalkeeper with the longest unbroken run of clean sheets in FIFA World Cup history. The Spanish shot-stopper has overtaken Walter Zenga’s record of 517 minutes set during Italy 1990, a milestone that had stood unchallenged for more than thirty years.
The Vitoria-born keeper’s record-breaking streak began during the Qatar 2022 World Cup, where he kept his goal intact for the final 39 minutes against Japan and through the entire Round of 16 clash with Morocco, including extra time.
Simón carried that exceptional form into Spain’s first four fixtures at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, surpassing legendary names such as Iker Casillas, Peter Shilton, Sepp Maier, and Gianluigi Buffon along the way.
The new record also highlights the remarkable defensive strength of Luis de la Fuente’s Spanish side. Spain advanced to the knockout rounds without conceding a single goal in the group stage and maintained the same resilience in their first elimination-round encounter.
