Action has been taken against apps capable of remotely shutting down e-rickshaws; reports indicate that two such apps have been deleted. The government also intends to engage with app stores regarding this issue.

E-Rickshaw Shutdown App: Action has been taken against two apps that allow e-rickshaws to be shut down remotely, resulting in their deletion. The government had ordered the Apple App Store and Google Play Store to remove these apps. Furthermore, the government stated it would discuss with app stores how to prevent the listing of harmful apps. Notably, over the past few days, several videos have surfaced on social media showing individuals using a Chinese app to shut down e-rickshaws while they are being driven on the road. The government took cognizance of the matter after the videos went viral, and news of action against the two apps has now emerged.

Rickshaws Being Shut Down via BAT-BMS App

The BAT-BMS app was being used to remotely shut down e-rickshaws in various cities across the country. Sudden shutdowns in the middle of the road were compromising passenger safety and raising concerns regarding the security of the connected batteries. BAT-BMS is a Chinese app developed by Shenzhen Grenergy Technology. Although originally designed to monitor solar, off-grid, and marine batteries, it was being misused to shut down e-rickshaws.

How Does the BAT-BMS App Work?

Many e-rickshaws operate on lithium batteries equipped with a Bluetooth-enabled Battery Management System (BMS). If this system is not disabled or password-protected, it connects easily to the app. Once connected, the battery can be controlled via the app, which includes an option to disable the battery's discharge function. Tapping this cuts off power from the battery to the motor, bringing the e-rickshaw to a halt.

Can this app shut down other electric vehicles as well?

This app works with lithium batteries that have compatible systems. If another vehicle is equipped with such a battery and its BMS is not protected, this app can shut it down too. However, if the battery's BMS is password-protected or requires a proprietary app, it cannot be controlled using this app.
