Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has reportedly completed the paperwork for another loan move to Turkish side Trabzonspor. The two clubs are in the final stages of agreeing a deal that includes a loan fee and salary contributions, effectively ruling out any possibility of the Cameroon international returning to the Red Devils’ first-team plans.

Return to Turkey confirmed

As per reports from the Daily Mail Sport, Onana has signed documents confirming a second consecutive loan spell with Trabzonspor, with the clubs agreeing on a £1.3 million fee. The Turkish outfit have committed to covering the majority of his wages, ensuring he will not report back to Carrington this month. However, the deal does not include an option for Trabzonspor to make the move permanent next summer.

Onana delivered a strong performance during his initial season in Turkey, featuring in 34 matches across all competitions. Although he conceded 34 league goals, he recorded six clean sheets and played a key role in helping Trabzonspor lift the Turkish Cup. That victory added to an already impressive list of personal honours that includes three Eredivisie titles with Ajax, an Italian Cup with Inter Milan, and the FA Cup with Manchester United in 2024.

Transfer background and Old Trafford departure

Onana first joined Trabzonspor on loan last September, after it became evident that his future at Old Trafford was uncertain. Manchester United were initially hoping for a permanent transfer to recover part of the €50.2 million they paid to Inter Milan for his signing in 2023.

The Cameroonian goalkeeper made his name at Ajax before moving to Italy on a free transfer in 2022. Despite still having two years left on his Manchester United contract, the club opted against reintegrating him into the squad. Securing another loan spell means United can remove his £120,000-a-week wage from their books while they explore new options to strengthen their goalkeeping ranks.

Lammens secures his place as first-choice keeper

Onana’s departure further solidifies the starting position of Senne Lammens, who enjoyed an impressive debut season in the Premier League. The Belgian shot-stopper firmly established himself as United’s No.1 goalkeeper, making 32 appearances throughout the campaign.

Lammens conceded 39 goals but managed to keep eight clean sheets during his first season in England. His strong domestic performances have earned him a call-up to Belgium’s World Cup squad. Manchester United consider his £21.7 million signing from Royal Antwerp a major success, leaving no immediate need for Onana’s return.

What lies ahead?

Once Belgium wrap up their World Cup campaign, Lammens will rejoin Manchester United for pre-season training. Under manager Michael Carrick, the team is preparing for a promising season that includes a return to the UEFA Champions League. Meanwhile, Onana will report to Trabzonspor to begin his pre-season preparations, aiming to build on last year’s cup success and add another trophy to his growing collection.
