Former Manchester City and England defender Micah Richards has strongly advised Three Lions manager Thomas Tuchel to drop Arsenal winger Noni Madueke ahead of England’s World Cup round of 16 encounter against Mexico. Emphasising that England’s attacking rhythm has faltered, Richards firmly stated that Bukayo Saka should be reinstated to the starting lineup without delay.
‘Saka has to start!’
England were made to work hard in their round-of-32 match against DR Congo, coming from behind to secure a 2-1 victory and advance to the last 16. Despite the win, the performance was unconvincing, particularly down the flanks where the team appeared disjointed and out of ideas.
When asked about the changes Tuchel should consider, Richards told the BBC: “He needs to sort out the right-back position and decide which wingers to play. I think [Marcus] Rashford did not meet expectations, while [Anthony] Gordon impressed on the left wing after coming on. But if Saka is fit, he simply has to start. Even if he’s only 80 per cent fit, he has to play.”
Comparing Madueke’s and Saka’s statistics
Looking at their international records, Noni Madueke has made 15 appearances for England, scoring once and providing four assists. In this World Cup, he has started three matches and come off the bench once, registering an assist in the opening group-stage game against Croatia.
Bukayo Saka, on the other hand, brings far more experience, with 53 caps, 14 goals, and 11 assists for England. During this tournament, he has started only one match and appeared as a substitute in the other three, yet has still contributed two assists — one each against Croatia and Panama.
Barry’s ‘brilliant idea’
Thomas Tuchel revealed that a tactical suggestion from his assistant coach Anthony Barry — moving Declan Rice to right-back — was the turning point in England’s comeback win over DR Congo. The adjustment, introduced in the 70th minute along with Eberechi Eze replacing Djed Spence, quickly paid off as Harry Kane netted twice to secure the 2-1 victory.
“Anthony Barry had a brilliant idea to put Declan there,” Tuchel said after the match. “It allowed us to use his quality from the right side, making our crosses more threatening and difficult to defend. It also gave more support to Saka, and with Ebs Eze, we gained better connection on that flank which opened up our play. Full credit to my assistant.”
Mexico challenge awaits
England now face a monumental test against co-hosts Mexico at the legendary Azteca Stadium. The high altitude is expected to pose a significant challenge, something Tuchel openly acknowledged.
The German manager admitted: “The altitude will be a major disadvantage because we cannot physically adapt in such a short time. We have just three days between matches, and it’s simply impossible to fully adjust to the altitude.”
