This upcoming feature will bring a passkey-based login system for linked devices, making the process faster and more secure and reducing the reliance on QR code scanning. It will come to Android users first, while its availability on iPhone has not been confirmed yet.
Current Method: QR Code Linking
Now, if you want to use WhatsApp on a laptop or desktop:
You have to scan the QR code with your phone
Device links only after successful scanning
This is the only official method for multi-device login
What is changing?
With new updates being made:
Users will be able to link devices using a passkey instead of QR code
QR scanning option will remain, but it will be an optional method
The process will become faster and easier
What is Passkey?
Passkey is a modern authentication method that uses your device’s in-built security features, like:
fingerprint authentication
face unlock
screen lock security
It can be stored on your device or in a password manager, keeping it secure and protected from hacking attempts.
How the new feature might work
Once rolled out:
Users will get a confirmation prompt within WhatsApp when linking a new device
Once approved, the device will immediately connect via passkey verification
In some cases, WhatsApp may also require a QR scan for added security
Users have to create a passkey from Settings → Account → Passkeys.
