Celebrity skincare routines tend to follow a predictable pattern: serums, SPF, expensive moisturisers, and the occasional mention of drinking more water. Diljit Dosanjh does things differently. In the latest instalment of Vogue’s In the Bag series, the singer and actor revealed a nightly ritual that is rooted not in modern skincare science but in something far older, the ancient Indian practice of applying oil to the belly button, using a mixture of neem oil and mustard oil.
His explanation was simple and completely genuine. “This helps me a lot… It’s very important to nurture your belly button.”
It is the kind of statement that makes you smile, and then makes you curious. Because, as it turns out, there is considerably more to this practice than it might initially appear.

What Does Diljit Dosanjh Do Belly Button Oiling?Putting oil into the belly button is a tradition founded in Ayurveda, one of the oldest, traditional systems of medicine, originating thousands of years ago in India. The belly button, the Nabhi, as it is known in Ayurveda, is seen as one of the most vital points on the human body: a source of nourishment predating human existence and a bundle of veins and nerves that appear to extend to nearly every vital organ.

Oiling the navel is believed to help the body absorb the therapeutic properties of whatever oil is applied, carrying its benefits to various parts of the body through that concentrated network of connections. It is a practice that many Indian grandmothers have quietly maintained for generations, long before it became something anyone put on Instagram.

Why Neem And Mustard Oil Specifically?Neem, one of the best-known plants in Ayurvedic medicine, is widely used in Ayurveda and is one of the best-known remedies. Neem oil is high in fatty acids and imparts excellent antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
The oil, when used topically through the navel, is said to treat skin conditions (acne, dry skin, inflammation) and aid overall immunity and health of the gut. This is perhaps also why it is a traditional antifungal agent, with it being claimed that a course of everyday application maintains internal balance in a long-term manner that ultimately comes out as itself on the skin’s surface.
Mustard oil is one traditional Ayurvedic ingredient widely used by North Indian households for cooking, massage, and hair oil for many centuries. It has warming qualities and is rich in omega-3 and omega-6, and is known to promote circulation and nourish skin. Together with the neem oil, they make a combination that brings together the heat-boosting, circulation-improving qualities of mustard oil and the cool, antibacterial attributes of the neem.
