Following their commanding 2-0 triumph over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32, the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) has advanced to the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 for the fourth consecutive time. This victory sets up a high-stakes encounter against Belgium on Monday, July 6, at 5 p.m. PT / 8 p.m. ET in Seattle, Washington, where the team will aim to preserve their unbeaten record at the expansive venue.
The victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina marked only the second knockout-stage win in the team’s World Cup history. Moreover, the result ended a 12-match winless run against European opponents, offering a morale boost at a crucial stage of the tournament.
During the group stage, the USMNT posted a 2W-1L-0D record, securing wins over Paraguay and Australia. The team concluded the group phase with a tight 3-2 defeat to Türkiye, a match notable for featuring a record nine changes to the starting lineup from their previous game against Australia.
The United States has previously faced Belgium, known as the Red Devils, on seven occasions. Their first meeting remains the sole victory for the Americans—a 3-0 result at the inaugural 1930 World Cup in Montevideo, Uruguay. That historic contest, which marked the USMNT’s first-ever World Cup appearance, continues to stand as the joint-largest margin of victory for the Stars and Stripes at a World Cup, a record recently equalled by their three-goal win over Paraguay in the opening match of this year’s tournament.
Since that initial encounter, the USMNT has suffered six consecutive defeats against Belgium. The most recent meetings came in the Round of 16 of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and a pre-tournament friendly in Atlanta earlier this year. A victory in the upcoming Round of 16 clash would propel the United States into the World Cup Quarterfinals for the first time since 2002.
