WhatsApp Username Controversy: The government has halted the rollout of WhatsApp's username feature before it could even launch. A notice has been sent to Meta seeking clarification.
WhatsApp Username Controversy: WhatsApp's new username feature has run into controversy even before its rollout. While users were already complaining about others reserving their names, the government has now stepped in. It has issued a notice to Meta demanding a response within three days and has also banned the feature's rollout in India. Today, we will explore how this feature works and the concerns that necessitated government intervention.
What is WhatsApp's username feature?
Currently, a mobile number is required to message or call someone on WhatsApp. The company introduced the username feature to change this. It allows users to contact others using a username instead of a mobile number. While a mobile number will still be necessary for account registration and verification, it will no longer be required to send messages or make calls. A similar feature is already available on Telegram; essentially, it gives users the option to conceal their real identities.
What are the concerns regarding this feature?
WhatsApp claims this feature is essential for user privacy, but it also raises security concerns. The primary worry is the potential for fraud by concealing one's identity. Usernames mask a person's real identity and hide their mobile number, which could lead to an increase in scams and fraud. The government has stated that this feature could escalate cybercrimes such as online fraud, phishing, and "digital arrest" scams. Furthermore, if someone creates a username resembling another person's name, a government department, or a bank, it would become easier to deceive people.
Investigations could also become difficult.
In addition to these concerns, the feature could create difficulties for investigative agencies. IPS officer Arun Bothra wrote on X that WhatsApp's username-based identity feature could pose a major challenge for law enforcement agencies. A similar feature is often why Telegram is linked to cases involving investment scams, fraud committed under the cover of anonymity, and cybercrime. Given WhatsApp's billions of users, even a minor design choice could have a significant impact on public safety. Experts also note that while tracing individuals via mobile numbers is relatively easy, usernames complicate the investigative process.
