Former Manchester United academy product Danny Simpson has made a surprising return to professional football, a decision that has caught many supporters off guard.

Simpson progressed through Manchester United’s youth ranks after joining the club at the age of around 11 or 12, eventually earning a place in the reserve teams.

He made his first senior appearance for United in September 2007 during the League Cup third-round clash against Coventry City, where he featured alongside Jonny Evans, who was also making his senior debut for the club.

Simpson’s Premier League debut came a month later against Wigan Athletic. Coming on as a substitute in the 30th minute for the injured John O’Shea, Simpson provided an assist for Wayne Rooney’s goal with a precise cross. He was part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s historic 2007/08 double-winning team.

During his time at Old Trafford, Simpson also had loan spells with Royal Antwerp, Sunderland, Ipswich Town, and Newcastle United. Despite his talent, he struggled to secure regular first-team football due to competition from seasoned defenders such as Gary Neville and Wes Brown.

Simpson departed United permanently in 2010, joining Newcastle United. His crowning moment came in 2016 when he was part of Leicester City’s remarkable Premier League title-winning side. After leaving the Foxes, he went on to play for Huddersfield Town, Bristol City, and Macclesfield before announcing his retirement in 2024.

In a new twist, Simpson has now confirmed his return to football, joining a club in Dubai. He will play alongside another former Manchester United talent, Ravel Morrison.

Simpson will also reunite with former Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, who serves as the head coach. Former Crystal Palace star Jason Puncheon, who co-owns Arabian Falcons and oversees football operations, is also part of the setup.

Explaining his choice to move to Dubai, Simpson said, “The opportunity to join Jonjo and this exciting project was one I couldn’t turn down.”

He added, “I still have plenty to contribute on the pitch and am eager to help the team reach its goals. The club has a clear vision, and I want to play my role in delivering a successful, promotion-winning season.”

Shelvey expressed his delight at Simpson’s arrival, saying, “I’m really pleased to welcome Danny Simpson to Arabian Falcons. After stepping in for the final five games last season and narrowly missing promotion, we now have the chance to build properly in my first full campaign.”

He continued, “Danny is the perfect addition – a Premier League champion with immense experience, leadership, and a strong winning mindset.”

“His presence will immediately strengthen the team and be vital in guiding the younger players. This marks the beginning of building a squad that, I strongly believe, can secure promotion this season.”
