Vitor Pereira says Nottingham Forest departure was ‘a complete surprise’

Vitor Pereira has revealed that his exit from Nottingham Forest came as a “complete surprise” and “without any prior warning”.

The Portuguese manager, who signed an 18-month contract with the club in February, successfully guided Forest to safety in the Premier League and led them to a semi-final appearance in the Europa League.

However, his contract included a break clause for June, and as that date approached, the club informed Pereira of their decision to move in a new direction.

Reports suggest that Oliver Glasner, who parted ways with Crystal Palace at the end of last season, is expected to step into the managerial position at the City Ground.

In a statement, Pereira said: “Today marks the end of my journey as head coach of Nottingham Forest.

“I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone associated with this remarkable football club.

“Although this decision came as a complete surprise to me and without any warning, I fully respect the club’s right to make choices it feels are best for its future.

“Naturally, I am disappointed and saddened. I truly believed in the project we were building together, and I leave with a sense of pride in what we accomplished over these past months.

“Together, we enjoyed a memorable conclusion to the season. We secured Premier League survival, reached the Europa League semi-finals, and created moments that will stay with me forever.

“Most importantly, I witnessed a group of players grow in confidence, belief, and unity.

“Watching them develop, fight for one another, and represent this club with passion has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my career.

“I would like to thank my coaching staff, the players, everyone behind the scenes, and especially the fans. From the very first day, your passion, loyalty, and steadfast support made me feel incredibly welcome. You stood by us through every challenge and every success, and I will always appreciate that.

“I leave Nottingham Forest with no bitterness or resentment — only respect, gratitude, and wonderful memories.

“Football is full of unexpected turns, and while this chapter ends earlier than I anticipated, I will always look back on my time here with pride and affection.

“I wish the players, staff, supporters, and everyone at Nottingham Forest continued success in the years ahead.

“This is a special club, and I sincerely hope it continues to grow and achieve great things.

“Thank you for everything, Vitor Pereira.”

The club declined to comment when approached by the Press Association.

Pereira, who had also helped Wolves retain their Premier League status the previous season, won eight of his 20 matches in charge of Forest, ensuring the team will compete in the top flight for a fifth consecutive season.

Former Crystal Palace manager Glasner has been linked with several high-profile roles across Europe after winning the FA Cup in the 2024–25 season and securing the Conference League title a year later.
