An important diplomatic conversation took place between the US and Iran in Doha, which ended on Wednesday, July 1, 2026. In this meeting, Qatar and Pakistan played an important role of mediator. The main discussion was on the issue of America breaking the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and returning Iran’s frozen assets.

Who attended the meeting?

The US team was led by a technical delegation, including envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who met with Qatari mediators. President Donald Trump described these talks as very good. Meanwhile, from Iran’s side, Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi was leading the team. Officials from the Ministry of External Affairs, Central Bank and Agriculture Ministry were also included in it.

Dispute over MoU rules

In this discussion held in Doha, America was accused of violating the rules of the MoU. Iran specifically mentioned the first paragraph to the Lebanon conflict. Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi clearly said that all the terms of the MoU are linked together and cannot be seen separately.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei warned that if the US violated the MoU, it would respond immediately and decisively. He called it a violation of Article 1 of the agreement. A direct communication channel will be created by Thursday, July 2, 2026 to officially register and resolve any complaints.

frozen property case

The biggest issue of this meeting was the release of Iran’s frozen assets. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on June 29 that $6 billion in assets frozen in Qatar would be released under an initial agreement. Deputy Foreign Minister Gharibabadi said that both sides have agreed to release a part of this amount so that Tehran can buy essential goods.

According to some media reports, an initial agreement has been reached to release $3 billion as the first part of the $6 billion. This money was earlier in South Korean banks and was later transferred to Qatar. However, US officials have denied that any agreement has been reached on the release of funds.

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry confirmed on 1 July that no funds had yet been sent to Tehran. The ministry made it clear that releasing money in the future will depend on how much progress is made in the talks between America and Iran.
