Iran has resumed direct flight operations to Mumbai after a five-month suspension, restoring an important air link between the two countries for business travellers, tourists and members of the Indian and Iranian diaspora.

According to Iran’s state news agency IRNAthe resumption of flights marks the restoration of one of the key international routes connecting Iran with India. The service had remained suspended for nearly five months before operations restarted this week.

The revival of the Mumbai route is expected to facilitate smoother travel for passengers, strengthen commercial exchanges and support people-to-people ties between the two countries. Mumbai has traditionally been one of Iran’s important aviation destinations in South Asia due to its role as India’s financial capital and a major international gateway.

The reopening of flight services comes at a time when Iran is gradually restoring international connectivity following disruptions caused by regional security developments and operational challenges that affected several air routes in recent months. Airlines across the region have continued to adjust schedules based on evolving security assessments and airspace conditions.

Industry observers say the restored route is likely to benefit business communities engaged in bilateral trade, particularly in sectors such as energy, pharmaceuticals, agriculture and shipping. Direct connectivity also offers greater convenience for students, medical travellers and families with cross-border links.

The resumption of flights coincides with renewed diplomatic engagement between New Delhi and Tehran. Earlier this week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkianduring which both leaders discussed recent developments in West Asia. India reiterated its support for dialogue, diplomacy and sustained efforts to ensure peace, stability and freedom of navigation in the region.

Aviation experts note that restoring direct international routes is an important indicator of improving operational confidence and growing passenger demand. As travel restrictions ease and airlines rebuild networks, additional frequencies and destinations could be considered if demand continues to recover.

While operational schedules and flight frequencies are expected to be announced by the concerned airline, the restoration of the Mumbai route is seen as a positive step in strengthening India-Iran connectivity. Authorities are expected to monitor passenger demand and operational performance as services resume.

The development is also expected to provide a modest boost to tourism and bilateral economic engagement, reinforcing long-standing cultural and commercial ties between India and Iran.
