The Central Sanskrit University has announced the launch of a B.Tech program in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science, bridging technology with Indian tradition. This course will commence at the Nashik campus starting from the 2026-27 academic session. Its objective is to equip students with proficiency in new technologies while teaching them to utilize AI for the preservation of Indian languages, ancient texts, and cultural heritage. This initiative offers youth the opportunity to connect with the Indian knowledge tradition while preparing for future employment prospects.
The program has received approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). It stands among the pioneering engineering courses launched by a Sanskrit university.
**Preserving Ancient Texts with AI**
India possesses millions of manuscripts in Sanskrit and other ancient languages, many of which are not yet available in digital format. The new course will train students on using AI to read and translate ancient documents, create digital archives, and safeguard vital information. This is expected to significantly aid in the preservation of India's cultural heritage.
**Subjects to be Taught**
The B.Tech program will offer a total of 66 seats, comprising 60 regular and 6 supernumerary (additional) seats. Students will study subjects such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Python programming, Cloud Computing, Deep Learning, and Statistics. Additionally, training will be provided in modern technologies like Natural Language Processing (NLP), Speech Recognition, Conversational AI, Computational Linguistics, and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) tailored for ancient manuscripts.
**Focus on Both Indian Knowledge Tradition and Career**
The course will integrate AI with Indian knowledge domains such as Ayurveda, Yoga, Astrology (Jyotish), Vastu, and Nyaya. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also lauded this initiative, noting that it will enable youth to acquire modern technical skills while remaining connected to their cultural heritage. Given the demand for trained professionals in the rapidly growing AI sector, this course will not only offer students excellent career opportunities but also play a significant role in preserving Indian languages and ancient knowledge.
