According to the Central Investigation Agency, a case was registered in connection with the disturbances during the Ram Navami procession in Rishra in Hooghly district in 2023. Later this case was handed over to NIA.
Taking action in this case, NIA officials on Tuesday arrested the husband of the former Trinamool MP from his house in Rishra.
Shakir is the Trinamool councilor of Ward No. 4 in Rishra Municipality. On Tuesday, NIA along with CRPF jawans raided his house in Rishra. Shakir was at home at that time.
After the arrival of NIA officials, a crowd gathered outside the former MP’s house. After some time, news came that Shakir had been arrested. BJP had alleged that the violence during Ram Navami in Rishra was instigated by councilor Shakir Ali.
Trinamool Congress had not given ticket to two-time MP Aparupa Poddar for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He had openly expressed his displeasure about this and claimed that he did not get the ticket because he did not have much money. She said that she will remain with Mamata Banerjee as an ordinary Trinamool worker. At the same time, Aparupa’s husband Shakir Ali has been a Trinamool councilor for a long time.
In another incident, Serampore police on Tuesday arrested Sudarshan Bar, an influential member of Piarapur gram panchayat and a close aide of Trinamool MP from Serampore Kalyan Banerjee.
BJP MLA Dilip Singh has alleged that Sudarshan faces several charges, including assault on party workers, forceful occupation of land, corruption in Panchayat and extortion to building a factory along National Highway 19. The arrested person will be produced in Serampore Court.
