Train Ticket Refund Rule: If you miss your train for any reason, you can still get a refund, but you must file a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) as soon as possible. Here are the full details.
Train Ticket Refund Rule: Most train travelers know that trains depart at their scheduled times. If a train is scheduled for 6:00, it will leave the station at that time. That is why most passengers leave home early to reach the station; however, traffic jams or unexpected issues sometimes cause passengers to miss their trains.
In such situations, people often feel their money has gone to waste, but that is not always the case. According to Indian Railways rules, passengers can receive a refund even after missing the train under certain circumstances. Since many people are unaware of this, it is worth learning about it now to avoid financial loss.
Steps to get a refund
Tickets cannot be cancelled once the reservation chart has been prepared. In such cases, you must file a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) to claim a refund; obtaining a refund without it is difficult. If you missed the train due to your own oversight, you should file the TDR as soon as possible. Your application will be verified, and if found valid, the Railways will refund the balance amount after deducting applicable charges.
Can you get a refund for a counter-booked ticket?
If you purchased your ticket from a railway station counter, you will need to take specific steps, such as:
- Surrendering the ticket at the counter within two hours of the train's departure.
- Fill out and submit a TDR form there.
- Receiving a receipt from the Railways once the application is accepted.
- Keep this receipt safe.
- Waiting for the refund, which takes between 30 and 90 days.
Know the rules for booking tickets online.
If you have booked a ticket via the IRCTC website or mobile app, familiarize yourself with the complete process for filing a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt).
- First, log in to your IRCTC account.
- Next, go to 'My Transactions' and open 'Booked Ticket History'.
- Select the ticket's PNR and click on the 'File TDR' option.
- Then, select the 'Passenger Not Travelled' option and submit the request.
- Following Railway verification, the refund amount will be credited to the same bank account used to pay for the ticket.
- However, please note that a TDR can only be filed within one hour of the train's scheduled departure.
Making this mistake means no refund.
- If you fail to file the TDR within the stipulated timeframe, your refund claim will not be accepted.
- The Railways will not issue a refund if you miss a 'Tatkal' ticket train due to your own fault.
- If you select an incorrect reason while filing the TDR, your application may be rejected during the Railway's verification process.
- No refund is granted if you cancel the ticket using the standard cancellation method after the train has already departed.
- Passengers holding RAC or waitlisted tickets must file a TDR before the prescribed deadline; otherwise, they will not receive a refund.
