Manchester United are reportedly preparing an ambitious move to sign two of Manchester City’s most promising young midfielders, as they continue to strengthen their youth and senior squads.
Jason Wilcox, who spent more than ten years working at Manchester City in various capacities before moving to Southampton in 2023 and later joining Manchester United in 2024, is believed to be a key figure behind the latest transfer pursuit.
Since taking on the role of Director of Football at United, Wilcox has frequently leveraged his extensive network from his time at City. Now, he is said to be attempting to lure two standout prospects from the club’s academy.
According to a report by The Daily Mail, Manchester United are “attempting to raid” Manchester City’s youth setup for two highly rated 16-year-old midfielders.
The first player on United’s radar is Xavier Parker, an England Under-16 international who joined City from West Ham United in 2024. Known for his attacking instincts, Parker impressed for the Under-18 side at just 15 years of age, contributing directly to 10 goals in 13 U18 Premier League appearances last season. Liverpool are also understood to be monitoring his progress closely.
The second target is Karim Cassim, another midfielder with youth-level England experience. The England Under-17 international featured in 10 matches for City’s Under-18 side last term, showcasing composure and maturity beyond his years in central midfield.
This would not be the first time Manchester United have targeted talent from their local rivals’ academy. In 2023, they secured the services of Darren Fletcher’s twin sons, Jack and Tyler, from Manchester City in a deal worth £1.25 million. Should United succeed in adding Parker and Cassim, it could further strain relations between the Premier League giants.
Meanwhile, United’s recruitment efforts are not limited to youth prospects. They are also focused on bolstering their senior midfield options, with Felix Nmecha of Borussia Dortmund emerging as a top target. Interestingly, Nmecha also began his career at Manchester City, making three senior appearances before moving to VfL Wolfsburg in 2021.
The Germany international, who is currently enjoying an impressive World Cup campaign in North America, is valued at around €120 million (£104 million). However, Borussia Dortmund are reluctant to part ways with the 25-year-old midfielder this summer.
Manchester United’s pursuit of both youth and established talent underlines their intent to rebuild a dominant midfield core for the future, even if it means raiding their cross-town rivals to do so.
