In a recent discussion with talkSPORT, journalist Ben Jacobs revealed that Manchester United remain in contention to sign West Ham United’s talented midfielder Mateus Fernandes.
Jacobs explained, “Manchester United are still in negotiations with the player as well as with West Ham United, while Tottenham Hotspur are also involved in the talks.
“There have been rumours within the last 24 to 48 hours suggesting that a deal with Spurs is already complete. That isn’t the case yet.
“Tottenham have progressed further in their discussions with the player; however, Manchester United’s talks began before Tottenham entered the race, and things could shift quite quickly.
“As of now, Fernandes hasn’t made a final decision on which club he wishes to join – and there might still be more clubs entering the competition for his signature.
“It’s worth recalling that Arsenal had shown interest earlier in the summer before the transfer window opened; Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid also admire the player.
“Manchester United are continuing formal discussions with West Ham, and from what I understand, both United and Spurs are waiting to get confirmation from the player regarding his preferred destination – once that happens, it will strengthen their hand in negotiations with West Ham United.”
Fernandes enjoyed an impressive campaign with the Hammers last season. The Portuguese midfielder made 42 appearances across all competitions, scoring five goals and providing five assists, showing his growing influence in the team.
At just 21 years old, Fernandes is regarded as one of the most promising young midfielders in the Premier League. Securing his services this summer would therefore represent a major boost for Manchester United.
His current contract at the London Stadium runs until the summer of 2030, which is likely to make it challenging for the Red Devils to secure him for a bargain fee later this year.
Fernandes is known for his strong defensive contribution, his ability to strike powerfully from distance, and his vision to deliver incisive passes in the final third. His relentless energy and work rate make him a dynamic presence in central midfield.
Primarily a box-to-box midfielder, Fernandes can also operate effectively as a defensive midfielder or in an advanced playmaking role if needed. With his experience in the Premier League, he would likely adapt quickly to life at Old Trafford.
Adding Fernandes would significantly strengthen Michael Carrick’s midfield over the long term. The young Portuguese is talented enough to compete for a regular place in Manchester United’s starting lineup next season.
Given his age and potential, Fernandes’ future looks exceptionally bright. Therefore, Carrick would do well to intensify his efforts to bring him to Manchester United during this transfer window.
