Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte has sustained a knee ligament injury while representing Uruguay in their 1-0 defeat against Spain. Early medical assessments suggest that the 25-year-old may have torn his cruciate ligament.
The injury occurred when Ugarte landed awkwardly after contesting the ball with Pedri. He was stretchered off the field in the 45th minute. Manchester United confirmed in an official statement that the player suffered a knee ligament injury during international duty. The club added that further evaluation is underway to determine the appropriate treatment plan and the expected duration of his rehabilitation. The statement also extended best wishes for Ugarte’s swift recovery and assured full support throughout his recovery process.
Before joining Manchester United in 2024 for a reported transfer fee of €50 million, Ugarte played the 2023–2024 season with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
If the suspected cruciate ligament tear is confirmed, the Uruguayan midfielder could face several months on the sidelines, potentially missing a significant portion of the upcoming season.
The international friendly took place at Estadio Akron in Zapopan on Friday, where Alex Baena’s 42nd-minute strike sealed victory for Spain and knocked out La Celeste from the competition.
