As if automotive fans needed another reason to admire the Porsche 911, the latest JD Power 2026 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS) has declared the legendary sports car as the model with the highest initial quality among all vehicles currently available in the United States. Porsche as a brand also secured the top position for initial quality in the premium brand segment. Meanwhile, Ford claimed dominance in the pickup truck categories and was recognised as the brand with the best initial quality among mainstream manufacturers.

The 2026 IQS results were derived from feedback provided by 78,514 owners and lessees of new 2026 model-year vehicles, surveyed after 90 days of ownership. The overall new-vehicle quality was assessed based on the number of problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), where a lower score indicates better quality. This year’s industry average stood at 175 PP100. Porsche achieved an impressive score of 138, placing it well ahead of second-place premium brand Genesis at 151, while Lexus secured third place in the premium category with 156 PP100.

This marks a major improvement for Porsche compared to the 2025 IQS, when it recorded a score of 188, just above that year’s industry average of 192 PP100. The Porsche 911 performed exceptionally well in 2026, earning a score of 110. However, BMW also made a strong showing, with six of its models—the 2-Series, 5-Series, 8-Series, X2, X6, and X7—achieving the highest rankings in their respective premium brand segments.

Porsche’s manufacturing facilities also garnered recognition. The company’s Leipzig plant in Germany, which produces the Macan and Panamera, along with its Stuttgart facility, responsible for building the 911 and Taycan, both received Gold Plant Quality Awards. However, the highest honour, the Platinum Plant Quality Award, went to Toyota Motor Corporation’s Kyushu 1 plant in Japan, which manufactures the Lexus NX and UX.

In the mainstream brand category, Ford emerged as the top performer with an overall score of 152. Nissan followed closely with a score of 156, while Buick ranked third at 162. The Ford Mustang was named the highest-ranked Sporty Car, but the company’s real strength was in the pickup truck segment. The Ford F-150 was rated as the best Large Light Duty Pickup, while the Super Duty series topped the Large Heavy Duty Pickup category.

At the lower end of the rankings were Cadillac with a score of 229, Volkswagen at 233, and Infiniti, which recorded the lowest score at 235 PP100. In the previous year’s 2025 survey, Audi had ranked last with 269 PP100. Although Audi remains on the lower side of the list in 2026, it managed to improve its performance to 225 PP100.

Therefore, for anyone planning an ideal two-car garage for 2026, the JD Power findings suggest that a combination of a Porsche 911 and a Ford F-150 would be hard to beat. Both vehicles not only excel in their respective categories but also promise a more trouble-free ownership experience—at least in the first three months of use.
