Bangladesh’s Teesta River Management and Restoration Project (TRCMRP) increased India’s concern! China said on Monday that they are determined to help Dhaka in this matter. At the same time, the country emphasized that this joint project of Bangladesh and China is not aimed at any third party. The matter should be free from third party influence.
After becoming the prime minister, Tariq Rahman visited China on his first foreign visit. It was then that Dhaka-Beijing talked about the Teesta project. On the other hand, the Sheikh Hasina government entrusted this project to India. The Tarek government is approaching China to change that decision. New Delhi is worried about ‘chicken neck’ since then! As the Teesta basin is located very close to the northeastern region of India. One of India’s concerns about the Dhaka-Beijing joint venture is the project’s geographical location.
However, responding to a question about India’s concerns at a press conference in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said, “I want to emphasize that China-Bangladesh cooperation is not aimed at any third party.” He further said, “Management and restoration of Teesta river is a very important public welfare project of Bangladesh. China is ready to help this project as much as possible.” Besides, China has informed that Beijing is ready to increase exchange and cooperation with Bangladesh in various fields including economy, trade, water resources management, public welfare.
According to Dhaka sources, Bangladesh and China have reached an agreement to increase cooperation in the management of Bangladesh’s rivers, including the Teesta. Note that in January this year, Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) and Chinese state-owned enterprise Power China signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU), through which the process of implementing the Teesta project has been accelerated. In this situation, India will keep a close eye on Bangladesh’s Teesta project.
