Barcelona have reportedly made contact with Harry Kane’s representatives as the club explores what could be one of the boldest transfer moves in recent times. The Catalan powerhouse is said to be considering a swoop for the England captain, who is currently showcasing his talent at the World Cup, in their search for a long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski.

Barcelona target Bundesliga star

The Blaugrana are believed to have shown keen interest in the 32-year-old striker, with reports from the Daily Mail indicating that the club plans to revisit the matter once England’s World Cup campaign in 2026 concludes. Having recently lost Lewandowski, who has completed a move to Major League Soccer club Chicago Fire, Barcelona are eager to secure a top-tier forward to spearhead their attack, with Kane identified as the ideal marquee signing.

Despite their ongoing financial challenges, the Spanish giants are exploring inventive methods to finance a deal for the forward, who has just one year left on his current contract with Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena. While the German champions are determined to retain their star man, the allure of Camp Nou may test Kane’s dedication to the Bavarian project after his successful stint in Germany since leaving Tottenham Hotspur.

Initial response from Kane’s camp

Early indications from Kane’s representatives suggest that negotiations may prove complex. Reports claim that the player’s camp effectively ended initial discussions after a brief phone call from Barcelona, with Kane currently content at Bayern Munich. Nevertheless, Barcelona remain undeterred and are prepared to make a renewed push if any opportunity arises after the World Cup in North America.

Kane has been in exceptional form since arriving in Germany, recently surpassing all previous records to become England’s all-time top scorer in World Cup history. Given his status and importance, Bayern are expected to demand a huge transfer fee to even consider his departure, despite his age and contract situation.

World Cup focus remains paramount

The timing of Barcelona’s approach is particularly sensitive, as Kane’s attention is firmly set on leading Thomas Tuchel’s side through the knockout rounds. The striker has already scored three times during the group phase, continuing his incredible form after a season in Munich where he recorded 61 goals in 51 appearances. Any decisions about his club future are expected to be postponed until England’s World Cup journey concludes.

England are scheduled to face DR Congo in the round of 32 in Atlanta, and Kane is fully focused on national duties. Reflecting on his recent achievements, he told BBC Sport: “The World Cup is the biggest competition for any professional footballer, so reaching 11 goals is something I’m very proud of. I just want to enjoy this moment with my teammates. I never take these opportunities for granted. It’s another great milestone, and I hope it’s not the last one in this tournament.”

The Lewandowski succession plan

If the transfer materialises, it would mark the second time Kane steps into Robert Lewandowski’s shoes, having previously succeeded the Polish striker at Bayern Munich. Barcelona view the English forward as the only player capable of consistently delivering the same prolific output required in Hansi Flick’s attacking system. However, persuading Bayern to part ways with their star forward will be a major challenge. In anticipation of potential obstacles, the club is reportedly keeping backup options open in case the Kane pursuit proves too complicated.

One alternative under consideration is Atletico Madrid’s striker Julian Alvarez, who has recently been the subject of intense transfer speculation. Reports suggest growing optimism within Camp Nou following the Argentine’s recent comments hinting at a possible exit from Atletico. Regardless of whether Barcelona ultimately focus on Kane or Alvarez, the club is expected to commit to a substantial financial investment in the upcoming transfer window.
