Manchester United forced to revise transfer strategy after Manuel Ugarte’s World Cup injury setback

Manchester United’s summer transfer strategy has been thrown into turmoil following a major injury to Manuel Ugarte during Uruguay’s clash with Spain at the 2026 World Cup. The midfielder was stretchered off in the first half of Uruguay’s 1-0 loss after twisting his knee.

The club are still awaiting a full medical assessment, but according to The Times, initial reports suggest the injury could be an ACL problem, which might sideline Ugarte for between nine and twelve months.

This development presents a significant challenge for Michael Carrick’s transfer planning, as sources within the player representation industry have informed CaughtOffside.

Manchester United had previously been open to letting Ugarte leave this summer, whether through a permanent move or a loan deal. However, the severity of his injury now makes any such move nearly impossible.

Even before this setback, United’s midfield was already earmarked for a major overhaul. Casemiro’s departure had left a considerable void, while Ugarte’s anticipated exit was expected to free up salary space, open a squad slot, and assist compliance with the Profitability and Sustainability Rules.

That plan has now been disrupted. Ugarte is expected to undergo his rehabilitation at Carrington, and since the injury occurred on international duty, United should be able to claim wage compensation through FIFA’s Club Protection Programme.

The programme provides coverage for qualifying injuries after the first 28 days of absence, though it primarily eases the financial impact rather than solving the sporting dilemma.

In response, United have already made progress in securing Atalanta midfielder Ederson, with The Times reporting that the deal is valued at approximately £38.8 million.

The club also remain keen on West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, though they face competition from Tottenham Hotspur for his signature.

Ugarte’s injury now makes the signing of at least two midfielders a pressing necessity for Carrick’s side. While Ederson would bring energy and defensive intensity, he cannot be expected to address all the midfield issues alone.

United should continue to pursue Fernandes if the fee remains reasonable, but it is equally vital to have backup options in place. Players such as Alex Scott, Carlos Baleba, and Felix Nmecha could fit the bill depending on budget constraints and availability.

The greatest error United could make at this stage would be to assume that Ugarte’s eventual recovery will resolve their midfield problems. This injury has simultaneously removed a squad option and a potential sale opportunity. Carrick urgently needs reinforcements, and United must act swiftly before the transfer market tightens further.
