London28 june. ICC ODI champion Indian team could not repeat its performance in the Women’s T20 World Cup and with the help of explosive half-century innings by Ellyse Perry (56 runs, 38 balls, eight fours) and Ashley Gardner (53 not out, 29 balls, three sixes, three fours), six-time former champion Australia eliminated it from the group stage with a six-wicket victory with six balls remaining here on Sunday.
Alice Perry and Ashley Gardner overshadow Harmanpreet’s fifty
Coming to bat first at the historic Lord’s Ground packed with spectators, the Indian team had scored a strong score of 170 runs for four wickets with the help of captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s aggressive half-century (56 runs, 27 balls, three sixes, six fours) and useful innings of other batsmen. But ‘Players of the Match’ Perry and Gardner proved too heavy and Australia scored 172 runs for four wickets in 19 overs.
Australia and South Africa from Group 1 in semi-finals
This is the second consecutive T20 World Cup when India failed to make it to the knockouts after losing their last league match to Australia. With India’s defeat, Australia and two-time runners-up South Africa have advanced to the semi-finals from Group 1 and will face West Indies and England respectively at The Oval on Tuesday and Thursday.
South Africa vs Bangladesh match score card
South Africa defeated Bangladesh by four wickets in its fifth and final league match played today and finished second with eight points behind unbeaten Australia (10 points). India finished third with six points due to three wins and two losses.
India made the highest score against Australia
Talking about the match, Australian women dominated most of the game, although there were some mistakes in fielding. Australian bowlers kept India in check for about 18 overs, but due to Harmanpreet’s stormy innings, India managed to score the highest score against Australia in the competition.
Phoebe Litchfield and Beth Mooney added 50 runs for the second wicket.
On the other hand, Australia chased the target well with the steady batting of Phoebe Litchfield (24 runs, 25 balls, one six, two fours) and Beth Mooney (22 runs, 20 balls, two fours) and the partnership of 50 runs in 40 balls between them for the second wicket.
Perry and Gardner scored 100 runs in 59 balls in a stormy manner.
After this Perry and Gardner took charge. Both of them scored half-centuries against the Indian spinners, continuously played shots in the gap and Gardner also hit big sixes in between, which silenced the noise of the Indian audience. There was a valuable partnership of 100 runs between these two for the fourth wicket in just 59 balls.
Australia needed 62 runs from the last six overs and then 34 runs from 24 balls. But Perry and Gardner, playing their 10th World Cup, accepted the challenge and scored 17 runs against Renuka Singh in the 18th over, leaving the equation at 17 runs in 18 balls. However, Perry became the victim of Sri Charani (2-32) (4-168) in the 19th over. Presently, Georgia Wareham hit the winning four on the last ball of the same over.
Openers Smriti and Shefali added 66 runs on 55 balls.
Earlier, India had a good start and the opening pair of Smriti Mandhana (38 runs, 37 balls, six fours) and Shefali Verma (34 runs, 26 balls, two sixes, three fours) made a solid partnership of 66 runs in 55 balls. However, both could not score runs quickly and the run rate never went above seven.
India had scored 43 runs without any loss in the powerplay. After this, Shefali tried to play aggressively but lost her wicket while trying to play a big shot to Australian captain Sophie Molineau. On the other hand, Mandhana also could not last long and was run out due to a misunderstanding with Jemimah Rodrigues (34 balls, 28 balls, one six, one four).
Partnership of 64 runs between Jemima and Harmanpreet
Jemima started by hitting a four off Molineau but could not maintain the rhythm in the rest of the innings. Jemima, who was the heroine of the victory against Australia in the ODI World Cup, also got a lease of life on the score of 27. He hit a six in the deep on the next ball of fast bowler Anabel Sutherland. After adding 64 runs in 45 balls with Harmanpreet, she retired hurt before the last over.
However, Harmanpreet scored fast and completed her half-century in 26 balls. A total of 23 runs were scored against Molineau (2-46) in the last over, in which Harmanpreet hit three consecutive sixes and was out on the fifth ball.
