Jude Bellingham has hailed Harry Kane as England’s “greatest ever” after the captain once again etched his name into the history books on football’s grandest stage. The Real Madrid midfielder played a crucial part as the Three Lions secured top spot in Group L with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Panama.
Kane makes history in New Jersey
Harry Kane officially surpassed Gary Lineker to become England’s all-time leading goalscorer at the FIFA World Cup after netting his side’s second goal in the win over Panama. The milestone strike came in the 67th minute at the New York/New Jersey Stadium when Kane rose above the defence to head home a precise cross from Jude Bellingham, marking his 11th goal in World Cup history.
That effort lifted him past the legendary Lineker, who had held the record with 10 goals since 1990. For Bellingham, witnessing his captain reach such a remarkable milestone only reinforced his belief that Kane is the finest striker ever to represent the nation.
Bellingham full of admiration for his skipper
Before turning provider for Kane, Bellingham had been the one to unlock Panama’s resilient defence. After more than an hour of patient but unproductive possession from Thomas Tuchel’s side, the 22-year-old midfielder took control from a Bukayo Saka corner to finally break the deadlock.
Following the match, Bellingham expressed his joy on social media: “First objective achieved! Round of 32, here we come! @harrykane Our greatest ever… Congrats brother!” Kane later responded, thanking Bellingham for celebrating the goal with him, writing: “Thanks for joining in the celebration @judebellingham.”
Tuchel makes key adjustments
Manager Thomas Tuchel opted to rotate his starting line-up for the final group fixture, introducing five changes from the team that had drawn with Ghana. With Reece James sidelined by a hamstring issue, Jarell Quansah started at right-back, while Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka returned to the flanks in place of Anthony Gordon and Noni Madueke.
The tactical reshuffle also saw Morgan Rogers included in a more attacking midfield setup. However, England appeared sluggish in the early stages, struggling to find their rhythm. Rashford tested goalkeeper Mosquera with a powerful strike in the seventh minute, while Panama remained dangerous on the break, forcing Jordan Pickford into a fingertip save from Jose Rodriguez midway through the first half.
Group L dominance and upcoming challenges
The victory ensured England finished top of Group L with seven points, narrowly ahead of Croatia on six. Though the performance relied more on individual brilliance and determination than collective fluidity, it secured England’s progression to the Round of 32. The Three Lions will now face tournament surprise package DR Congo in the knockout stage on 1 July in Atlanta, as the competition moves into its decisive phase.
