Wrexham AFC have officially announced the departure of their iconic forward Paul Mullin following the mutual termination of his contract, marking the end of a remarkable five-year chapter at the Racecourse Ground. The 31-year-old striker, instrumental in the club’s extraordinary rise under Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, now leaves as a free agent in search of a new challenge.
A Hollywood farewell for a Wrexham hero
The club’s co-owners, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have shared emotional tributes after confirming Mullin’s exit from Wrexham following five standout years in North Wales. Mullin, who led the Red Dragons’ incredible journey from the National League to the Championship, has been celebrated as a transformative figure for both the team and the local community.
In an emotional message, McElhenney expressed his heartfelt gratitude: “There is no more powerful feeling than the belief that we are a part of something larger than ourselves. It gives us meaning and purpose. It evokes moments of deep gratitude in times of triumph or tragedy because we are never truly alone. There are always people beside us to lift us when we fall. But there are some very special people who lead from the front, blazing a trail of radiant light and excellence for the rest of us to follow. Even if their brilliance may seem unattainable, their presence alone elevates the collective to unimaginable heights. They make us believe. Thank you @paulmullin12 for being that shining beacon for this club and community. Thank you for showing us what’s possible and for making us all believe.”
Building the Wrexham legend
Mullin joined Wrexham on a free transfer from Cambridge United in 2021, a stunning move considering he had just finished as League Two’s top scorer. He quickly justified the decision by scoring 110 goals in 172 appearances and earning the Club Player of the Season award a record three times. His prolific performances have cemented his place as the ninth-highest goalscorer in Wrexham’s history.
Ryan Reynolds also shared a heartfelt message, stating: “Every single day at Wrexham, both on and off the pitch, Paul set the benchmark for courage, tenacity, and humanity. No matter how far we fell, we never lost hope because we knew we had a real-life hero on our side — someone who could turn the final moments of a match into a miracle. He inspired not just a team but an entire town and beyond. That’s what makes Paul extraordinary. @paulmullin12, I hope you realise how you’ve transformed Wrexham and all of us. I’m honoured to have witnessed you make the impossible real and will forever be grateful. I know you’ll never stop fighting for what truly matters.”
‘After everything that I’ve done...’
Despite his legendary status, the final 18 months of Mullin’s time with Wrexham were challenging. Following surgery, he found himself out of favour and spent the 2025–26 season away from the club. After a brief spell with Wigan Athletic ended in January, he joined League One side Bradford City for the rest of the campaign.
Earlier this year, Mullin admitted that losing his starring role with the Red Dragons was difficult to accept. He told reporters: “It’s something I’ve found quite tough over the last 18 months. It came out of the blue, especially after everything I’d done and then having surgery. It kind of ended from there, which was hard to take – but that’s football. It’s something I’ll never fully accept because of what happened. It’s been tough, but you move on.”
A lasting legacy at the Racecourse Ground
Manager Phil Parkinson, who oversaw Mullin’s most successful years, praised his immense contribution to the club’s history. Under his guidance, Wrexham achieved unprecedented success, securing three successive promotions to reach the Championship. Mullin was one of only ten players to remain with the squad throughout that remarkable rise.
Parkinson said: “I’d like to wish Paul all the very best. This agreement allows him the time to find the right club that suits his next step. It’s impossible to overstate the role Mulls has played in Wrexham’s story over the past five years, providing countless memorable goals and moments. He’ll always be remembered and cherished by our supporters.”
