India is set to witness a complex mix of weather conditions over the coming days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting widespread rainfall across several regions even as some northern and eastern parts of the country continue to battle heat wave conditions. According to the latest All India Weather Summary and Forecast Bulletin issued on June 28, the southwest monsoon continues its gradual advance and is expected to move into more parts of the country during the next few days.
The weather agency noted that the Northern Limit of Monsoon currently passes through parts of the Arabian Sea and stretches through Surat, Indore, Mandla, Daltonganj and Motihari before extending towards Nepal. Conditions remain favourable for the further advancement of the southwest monsoon into additional areas of the North Arabian Sea, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, the remaining parts of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar, as well as some regions of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
As monsoon activity gains strength, multiple parts of the country are likely to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds.
Northeastern states are expected to remain among the most affected regions. Assam and Meghalaya are forecast to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated areas likely to witness extremely heavy downpours. Similar weather conditions are expected across Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, where intense rainfall activity could continue through the coming days. Arunachal Pradesh is also likely to experience significant rainfall activity.
The weather department has warned that prolonged heavy rainfall over these regions may increase the possibility of waterlogging, localized flooding and disruptions to transportation. Flash flood risks have also been identified across several districts of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, and parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim.
In eastern India, states including Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal are expected to experience widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm activity. Bihar and Odisha, in particular, may witness spells of heavy rainfall over the coming days. Moderate to intense lightning activity has also been predicted for several eastern regions.
Central India is also likely to experience active weather conditions. Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha are expected to receive fairly widespread rainfall over the next few days. Heavy rainfall activity has also been forecast for parts of Madhya Pradesh.
Western India too is expected to remain under the influence of rain-bearing systems. Konkan and Goa are likely to witness widespread rainfall activity, while Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada and Gujarat region are also expected to receive showers. Heavy rainfall warnings have been issued for parts of Konkan and Goa and later for sections of Gujarat and Maharashtra.
In southern India, weather activity is expected to remain strong over Kerala, coastal Karnataka, Telangana and adjoining areas. Kerala and Mahe are likely to experience periods of heavy to very heavy rainfall, especially during the initial phase of the forecast period. Coastal Karnataka may continue to receive widespread rainfall while Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka's interior regions could witness thunderstorms and gusty winds.
Despite the increasing spread of monsoon rainfall, some parts of north India continue to remain under heat stress conditions. Heat wave conditions are expected in isolated pockets of Bihar and Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi. Uttar Pradesh is expected to face particularly intense conditions, with severe heat wave situations predicted in isolated areas.
Thunderstorm activity is also expected to remain widespread. Several states are likely to witness lightning accompanied by strong winds with speeds reaching 40–50 kilometres per hour and gusting up to 60 kilometres per hour. Some regions may also witness stronger squalls.
The weather bulletin further advised people to stay updated with local weather forecasts and traffic advisories. Residents in vulnerable areas have been urged to avoid waterlogged stretches and unstable structures during intense rainfall periods.
