Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly continuing active negotiations for the potential signing of West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes.

According to reports, Tottenham’s discussions have progressed to an advanced stage, but Manchester United have also been in contact for some time. There is, however, no clear indication yet of Fernandes showing a preference for either club.

Transfer specialist Ben Jacobs has shared an update on the situation, clarifying that claims suggesting the player has already chosen a destination are premature at this stage.

Jacobs stated, “Manchester United and Spurs are both in talks with Mateus Fernandes and West Ham. Any reports saying the player has decided on a club are premature as of this morning.”

He further added, “Spurs have held advanced discussions with the player, while Manchester United’s negotiations have been ongoing since May. Both clubs remain in active talks with West Ham. A £90 million cash boost, combined with multiple interested parties, has seen West Ham maintain their initial valuation.”

Jacobs concluded by saying, “Further clarity is expected soon. Neither the clubs nor the player want this transfer saga to continue beyond July.”

Fernandes is among several highly rated midfielders available this summer, with some notable movements already taking place in the market.

As reported by The Athletic and other outlets, Elliot Anderson is set to join Manchester City, while BBC Sport confirms that Manchester United already have a deal lined up to sign Ederson from Atalanta.

Fernandes could potentially be another strong addition to Manchester United’s midfield, but Tottenham will be eager to complete the signing first.

Meanwhile, the north London club have also been heavily linked with Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali, as per the Daily Mail and other sources.

Other names on the radar include Adam Wharton and Alex Scott, while there has been increasing interest surrounding Lille and Morocco’s talented youngster Ayyoub Bouaddi.
