Himachal Pradesh achieved a significant milestone in its horticulture sector on Saturday with the flagging off of the first export consignment of fresh plums to Omanmarking the state’s entry into a new international market for its fruit produce.

The inaugural shipment is expected to strengthen Himachal Pradesh’s presence in overseas markets while creating fresh export opportunities for fruit growers. Officials said the initiative is aimed at expanding the global reach of the state’s high-quality horticultural produce and enhancing farmers’ incomes through international trade.

The export of plums to Oman represents a new chapter in Himachal Pradesh’s horticulture industry, which is widely known for producing apples, stone fruits, cherries, pears and other temperate fruits. Authorities said the successful dispatch of the first consignment reflects growing demand for premium-quality produce from the state in overseas markets.

According to officials, the shipment has been prepared in compliance with export standards relating to grading, quality, packaging and handling to ensure that the fruit reaches international consumers in optimal condition. The consignment is expected to open the door for regular exports during the plum harvesting season.

The government said expanding agricultural exports remains a priority and that efforts are being made to connect farmers with international buyers through improved logistics, cold-chain infrastructure and market linkages. Officials added that greater access to foreign markets could help growers secure better price realisation for their produce.

Himachal Pradesh’s horticulture sector plays a vital role in the state’s rural economy, providing livelihoods to thousands of farming families. The state has been focusing on increasing the export potential of fresh fruits by improving post-harvest management, quality certification and supply chain efficiency.

Officials expressed confidence that the successful export to Oman would encourage additional shipments in the coming weeks and pave the way for other horticultural products from Himachal Pradesh to enter international markets. They also said continued efforts would be made to identify new export destinations for the state’s fruit growers.

The first consignment is being viewed as an important step towards strengthening India’s agricultural exports while showcasing Himachal Pradesh’s premium horticultural produce on the global stage.
