Toni Kroos criticises Germany squad and cautions of World Cup elimination against Paraguay unless two key problems are fixed

Toni Kroos has delivered a blunt assessment of Germany’s current World Cup campaign, issuing a stark warning that the team could face elimination at the hands of Paraguay if two major weaknesses are not resolved quickly.

The 2014 World Cup champion expressed his dissatisfaction after Germany’s underwhelming conclusion to the group stage, cautioning that Julian Nagelsmann’s men risk an early exit from the knockout rounds unless they urgently strengthen their defensive organisation and rediscover the spark of their leading players.

Veteran squad struggles exposed

Germany topped Group E with a dominant 7-1 win over Curacao and a narrow 2-1 triumph against Ivory Coast. However, despite taking an early lead through Leroy Sane, Nagelsmann’s side fell to a 2-1 defeat against Ecuador in their final group fixture. Fielding their oldest starting lineup at a World Cup since 1998, the side’s sluggish display drew sharp criticism from analysts and fans alike.

Kroos calls for greater grit

High hopes surrounded Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz before the tournament, but both struggled to influence proceedings as Ecuador’s physical style nullified their usual creativity. Speaking during a TikTok live session with Lukas Podolski, Kroos openly contradicted Nagelsmann’s defence of his players’ commitment, insisting that the team lacked the necessary aggression and resilience.

Kroos remarked: “It needs to be unpleasant to play against us – that means defending with intensity and showing some grit. We’re not doing that right now. And we need [Jamal] Musiala and [Florian] Wirtz in their best form – which we don’t have at the moment.”

He continued: “If those two things don’t change, we won’t go much further. In the past, we also had games where we played poorly – like against Algeria – but we still managed to win those ugly matches. I don’t think this current team has that quality.”

“This is a group that gives everything. But I don’t agree with the coach saying complacency had absolutely nothing to do with it. It’s always there subconsciously when you’ve already qualified. You can’t just switch it off – it’s human. We simply aren’t a physical team.”

Podolski calls for calm reflection

While Nagelsmann defended his players following his rotation policy, former forward Lukas Podolski accepted that the setback could serve as an important reminder. Despite acknowledging tactical and structural flaws, both Podolski and Kroos expressed belief that the team still has potential if they can overcome the first knockout challenge.

Podolski commented: “Maybe a defeat like this is actually helpful. It’s a wake-up call – a slap in the face – that makes everyone say, ‘Alright, let’s stay grounded.’ Perhaps losing can be good if it forces each player to reflect privately. We shouldn’t criticise everything just yet. Let’s support the boys.”

Kroos remains optimistic

Kroos concluded: “And I stand by what I said – if we face France and everything comes together, we can beat them.”

Ahead to the knockout rounds

Despite the disappointing display, Nagelsmann appears determined to persist with the Musiala-Wirtz combination for Monday’s round-of-32 clash against Paraguay in Foxborough. Germany must quickly reestablish their defensive solidity and reignite their attacking creativity to overcome a determined South American side. A win could set up a thrilling round-of-16 encounter with favourites France – a test that will demand Germany’s absolute best with no room for mistakes.
