The monsoon season is just around the corner. While rain brings relief from the heat, it also brings high humidity. Many people use their ACs during the rainy season just as they do during peak summer heat. This can lead to higher electricity bills and potentially less comfort. High humidity levels in the air during the monsoon often cause a sticky, uncomfortable feeling. By making a few small adjustments to how you use your AC, you can maintain a cool environment, reduce humidity, and save money on electricity bills. Let’s look at some important points regarding this.
**Leaving windows and doors open**
Leaving windows or doors open while the AC is running allows humid outdoor air to enter the room. The AC then has to work harder to remove the excess moisture and cool the room down. Therefore, rooms should be kept closed while the AC is in operation.
**Avoid setting the temperature too low**
Many people believe that setting the AC to 18°C or 20°C will cool the room faster. However, this puts extra strain on the AC and consumes more electricity. Generally, a temperature setting between 24°C and 26°C is sufficient. This also helps in reducing electricity consumption.
**Avoid using 'Cool Mode' all the time**
One of the biggest mistakes is running the AC in 'Cool Mode' continuously during the rainy season. While this does lower the room temperature, it is not very effective at removing moisture from the air. Therefore, whenever it is humid, use the AC's 'Dry Mode'. 'Dry Mode' removes excess moisture from the air and consumes less electricity compared to regular cooling.
**Neglecting air filter maintenance**
During the monsoon, dust and moisture can accumulate on the AC filter. Dirty filters obstruct airflow and reduce cooling efficiency. Regularly cleaning the filter improves cooling efficiency and ensures the AC operates correctly, which can help lower electricity bills.
Neglecting the outdoor unit
During the rainy season, strong winds can cause leaves and dust to accumulate in the AC's outdoor unit. This places extra strain on the compressor and leads to higher power consumption. Make sure to clear away leaves and dust from around the outdoor unit and ensure there is sufficient open space for proper airflow.
