Sainik School Admission Rules: Many parents across the country dream of seeing their children become officers in the armed forces. When one thinks of a disciplined environment and an excellent career path, the name 'Sainik School' is often the first to come to mind. However, as the admission process is considered, various questions arise. A common point of confusion is whether education at Sainik Schools is entirely free or if hefty fees must be paid.
The rules and regulations governing Sainik Schools have evolved significantly over time. Until a few years ago, only boys were admitted to these schools; however, that is no longer the case. Today, girls from across the country are not only enrolling in these schools but are also preparing to ascend to high-ranking positions in the armed forces. If you wish to enroll your child in a Sainik School, here are the essential and updated details regarding fees, scholarships, and admission policies for girls.
Is education at Sainik Schools free?
The answer is no; education at Sainik Schools is not entirely free. As these are residential schools, the cost includes tuition fees as well as expenses for the hostel, mess (food), uniforms, and other activities. On average, the annual cost of attending a Sainik School ranges from ₹1.5 lakh to ₹1.8 lakh. However, this does not mean that children from low-income or middle-class families cannot study there; the government offers various scholarships to support them.
Are scholarships available at Sainik Schools?
The Sainik Schools Society (SSS), the Ministry of Defence, and various state governments provide substantial scholarships to support students' education.
Merit-cum-Means Scholarship: Families with low annual incomes whose children demonstrate academic excellence can receive tuition fee waivers ranging from 25% to 100%.
Category-based Concessions: Children belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SC) and the Scheduled Tribes (ST) receive special financial assistance from state governments. Defence Quota: The Ministry of Defence also provides fee concessions to the children of serving or retired Army personnel (JCOs/ORs).
How do girls get admission to Sainik Schools?
Since 2021, the Ministry of Defence has initiated the admission process for girls across all Sainik Schools in the country. Girls can now secure admission by qualifying in the All India Sainik School Entrance Examination (AISSEE). Approximately 10% of the total seats—or a minimum of 10 seats, whichever is higher—are reserved for girls in every Sainik School.
Age and Class Requirements
The admission criteria for girls are the same as those for boys:
Admission to Class 6: The girl must be between 10 and 12 years of age as of March 31st of the admission year. She must be currently studying in or have passed Class 5 at a recognized school.
Admission to Class 9: The girl must be between 13 and 15 years of age and must have passed Class 8. However, admission for girls in Class 9 is subject to seat availability at the specific school.
A Written Exam Alone Is Not Enough; A Medical Test Is Also Mandatory
Passing the written examination conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) is the first step toward entry into a Sainik School. This is followed by a medical test. Sainik School routines are quite rigorous; therefore, the girl must be physically and mentally fit. The final merit list is prepared based on the scores from both the written exam and the medical test, and seats are allocated to girls under their specific quota based on this list.
