Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood’s career path has taken another turn, with renewed developments surrounding his potential transfer. The English attacker, who enjoyed an impressive season with Marseille, has begun attracting attention from several top European clubs.
Manchester United are closely monitoring the situation at the Stade Velodrome for a compelling reason. The Premier League giants reportedly hold a substantial sell-on clause of around 40% in Greenwood’s contract, a factor that could significantly influence their summer transfer strategy.
Having finished third in the Premier League last season, United are expected to make major investments once again. Their strong second-half performance in the previous campaign was largely driven by smart signings during the summer window.
New recruits like Senne Lammens, Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko have become key figures in the starting lineup. INEOS, now in charge of football operations, plans to strengthen the midfield this summer, and any funds generated from Greenwood’s sale could be redirected towards fresh acquisitions.
Once considered one of United’s brightest academy prospects, Greenwood was expected to become a star at Old Trafford under then-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. However, off-field controversies disrupted his progress and led to his departure from the club.
The English forward left permanently in the summer of 2024 to join Marseille, where he has since thrived in Ligue 1. In the previous season, Greenwood recorded 26 goals and 11 assists in 45 appearances across all competitions.
Earlier reports from The Peoples Person suggested that AS Roma were eager to secure Greenwood’s services this summer. Fenerbahce were also reported to be in the race, with presidential candidate Hakan Safi stating his intention to sign the player if elected.
However, Safi’s defeat to Aziz Yildirim in the club’s presidential election temporarily paused discussions over a potential move. A new update, though, indicates that the deal could still materialise this summer.
According to French outlet L’Equipe, Fenerbahce have already agreed personal terms with Greenwood for a possible transfer. The publication reported: “Safi was unable to make a formal proposal to Olympique de Marseille, but he was truthful about the contractual matters: he had reached an understanding with Greenwood, his father and his lawyer, who played a vital role in the negotiations.”
The report further added: “The Turkish club’s new management has recently renewed contact with the 24-year-old Englishman and his representatives, offering a lucrative and attractive salary package.”
“Fenerbahce remain keen to land Greenwood, but their current bid of €30 million plus bonuses is far below Marseille’s valuation, as the French side are not willing to negotiate for less than €50–55 million.”
Additionally, the report mentions that Atletico Madrid and Al-Hilal are also monitoring the situation, though both clubs would need to complete player sales before making an official move. Roma, meanwhile, are focusing on reducing their squad size, even though manager Gian Piero Gasperini remains very interested in signing Greenwood.
Contrary to some claims, Marseille are not under financial pressure to accept a lower offer for their star forward. A source familiar with the situation told L’Equipe: “Many believe Marseille will be forced to offload Greenwood at a discount this summer, but that’s mistaken – there’s too much at stake, both symbolically and financially, for the club.”
Manchester United will be eager for a quick resolution to the situation, as a transfer could bring in a significant financial boost. However, current indications suggest that this transfer saga may continue throughout the summer window.
