Cole Palmer has stated that he is not dwelling on being left out of England’s World Cup squad, expressing his hope that the national team can ‘go all the way’ while he takes time to rest before the upcoming Premier League season.
The forward, who endured a challenging and injury-hit campaign, was a surprise omission from Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad. The England manager instead selected players such as Morgan Rogers, Noni Madueke, and Jude Bellingham, a decision that raised eyebrows among fans and pundits alike.
The debate over Palmer’s exclusion intensified following England’s goalless draw against Ghana earlier this week. Several analysts suggested that the Chelsea star could have provided the creativity needed to break down the Black Stars’ solid defensive line.
However, Palmer himself remains calm about the situation. The 22-year-old has chosen not to focus on the disappointment, instead wishing his team-mates success as they seek England’s first World Cup victory since 1966.
Speaking to i-D Magazine, Palmer said, “This season hasn’t been the best, but it is what it is. I’m not crying over a decision you can’t change, and I hope the lads make it all the way. If I’m not doing anything, then I’ll watch the matches.”
The Chelsea attacker has been seen vacationing in Ibiza, using the break to recharge before what promises to be another demanding campaign under new manager Xabi Alonso.
Palmer is confident he can rediscover his top form under Alonso’s leadership. He added, “I’m going to relax this summer, rest for the first time in three or four years, before getting back to what I love. Football is just a game of finding the moments. You can do something one game and not the next, and they’ll be on you. That’s how it works.”
