Nico Schlotterbeck could easily have been relaxing on the beaches of the Canary Islands or enjoying the sunshine in Italy by now.
After sustaining a torn ligament during Germany’s World Cup clash against Ivory Coast, it became evident that the tournament had come to an end for the Borussia Dortmund defender. In the worst-case scenario, his recovery could take up to three months.
However, this setback has not stopped Schlotterbeck from continuing to back his national side. The 26-year-old chose to remain with his teammates after receiving his diagnosis and was present at the stadium today for Germany’s final group match against Ecuador — on crutches, no less.
It comes as no surprise that head coach Julian Nagelsmann highlighted in an interview with ARD how vital Schlotterbeck’s presence is, even off the field. The centre-back’s positive energy and leadership qualities continue to uplift the squad, making him an integral part of the team’s spirit despite his injury.
For such dedication, postponing a well-deserved vacation seems like a small sacrifice. A truly commendable gesture from Schlotterbeck — a display of genuine team commitment!
