England head coach Thomas Tuchel has hinted that Bukayo Saka could once again start from the bench in the team’s upcoming FIFA World Cup fixture against Ghana. Although the Arsenal winger made a significant impact as a substitute by scoring during their opening 4-2 win against Croatia, his playing time continues to be carefully managed due to a lingering Achilles issue.
Tuchel’s decision to protect one of his star players comes as England look to maintain their strong start in Group L. Saka, aged 24, delivered an instant assist for Marcus Rashford after coming on in the second half against Croatia, but the coaching team remains cautious about pushing him too soon. Despite the winger’s determination to play through discomfort during Arsenal’s Premier League title campaign, Tuchel is prioritising his long-term fitness throughout the tournament.
Speaking about the player’s condition, Tuchel explained his strategy: “Bukayo is ready and will get more and more ready. I think once we go to the last game of this group he will be ready.” The manager’s words underline his intention to gradually build Saka’s fitness so that he peaks at the right stage of the competition.
This measured approach stands in contrast to Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s style, who is known for keeping detailed medical updates about his key players strictly within the club. Tuchel, on the other hand, has been more open in outlining his plans for Saka’s recovery during England’s World Cup campaign.
Medical evaluations confirm that Saka’s Achilles tendinitis has not worsened since the conclusion of the demanding domestic season. Tuchel’s decision to use him sparingly early on is intended to ensure he is at full strength for the knockout stages. England’s remarkable attacking depth allows such flexibility, with Noni Madueke expected to continue on the right wing. The squad’s strength was further demonstrated when Ivan Toney scored a hat-trick in a recent 5-1 closed-door friendly win over Sporting Kansas City, giving the coaching staff more attacking options.
England will face Ghana at the Boston Stadium on Tuesday in what promises to be a decisive top-of-the-table encounter. Ghana, having opened their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Panama, will pose a tough physical challenge as they aim to build on their strong start. A second successive win for the Three Lions would guarantee their place in the round of 32 ahead of their final group fixture against Panama in New Jersey.
