RBI Bank Holiday List: Here's Where Bank Branches Will Remain Closed for Muharram and Ashura
Bank Holiday Today: If you are planning to visit your bank branch today, it is important to check the latest holiday schedule issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Confusion over Muharram and Ashura holidays has left many customers wondering whether banks are open or closed in their cities.
The uncertainty arose after a few states revised their holiday dates based on the moon sighting, leading to different schedules across the country. Before heading to your nearest branch for cash deposits, withdrawals, cheque clearance, or account-related services, take a look at the official RBI bank holiday calendar.
Were Banks Open on June 25?
According to the RBI's official holiday list, most bank branches across India operated normally on Thursday, June 25, 2026. The only exception was Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, where banks remained closed to observe Muharram.
Customers in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and most other states were able to access regular banking services without interruption.
Why Are Banks Closed on June 26?
Friday, June 26, 2026, has been declared a bank holiday in several parts of India to mark Ashura (Muharram). As per the RBI holiday calendar, banks will remain closed in 18 major banking circles, including:
-
Delhi
-
Lucknow
-
Mumbai
-
Kolkata
-
Bengaluru
-
Chennai
-
Hyderabad
-
Patna
-
Ranchi
-
Raipur
-
Jammu
-
Srinagar
Several other banking centres will also observe the holiday in accordance with the RBI schedule.
Customers should note that while physical bank branches will remain closed in these locations, online banking, mobile banking, UPI, ATMs, and digital payment services will continue to function normally.
Why Did Kerala Change the Holiday Date?
Kerala initially planned to observe the Muharram holiday on June 25. However, after confirmation of the moon sighting and consultations with local Muslim organizations, the state government revised its decision and shifted the public holiday to June 26.
As a result, banks and government offices in Kerala remained open on June 25 and will observe the holiday on June 26 instead.
