Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to feature noticeably thicker rear camera modules and larger lens diameters, according to new leaks and dummy models that reveal significant physical changes to accommodate advanced camera upgrades. The iPhone 18 Pro Max will have a rear panel that is approximately 2mm thicker than the current iPhone 17 Pro Max, with the total thickness including the camera plateau reaching 13.77mm compared to 12.92mm on last year’s model.

The camera lens diameter has also increased, with measurements showing lenses now measuring approximately 16.5mm compared to the previous 16.1mmindicating larger optical components that will enable improved photography capabilities. These physical changes are necessary to accommodate three major camera upgrades that Apple is reportedly implementing for the iPhone 18 Pro series. The first upgrade is a variable aperture Main camera that will allow users to dynamically adjust the lens opening, improving depth of field control, light management, and exposure similar to professional SLR cameras. The second upgrade is a wider aperture for the Telephoto camerawhich will enhance zoom capabilities and low-light performance for portrait photography.

The third upgrade includes pro-focused software features that will leverage the enhanced hardware for advanced photography workflows. The main camera sensor is expected to retain 48-megapixel resolution while featuring a larger sensor size for improved light capture. Both the ultrawide and telephoto sensors are rumored to also be 48-megapixel units sized at 1/2.55 inches, with the ultrawide lens gaining improved optical image stabilization and the telephoto supporting zoom capabilities between 4x and 8x.

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to launch in September 2026with the standard iPhone 18 arriving in spring 2027. These camera upgrades represent Apple’s most significant investment in iPhone photography hardware, positioning the Pro models as serious tools for professional photographers and content creators who demand high-quality imaging capabilities. The thicker camera bump may affect case compatibility, requiring users to purchase new cases designed specifically for the iPhone 18 Pro series’ altered dimensions.
